Thanks for the welcome all. As coin forums go this site is my favorite. As for these counterfeits there easy for me to spot but still the amount of buyers get that bargain fever blindness. I'm looking at ebay today and not seeing any fakes. not even any 2 headed 1895 trick coins. E-bay closed the door and stopped the flies coming in.

Kidding aside, this is a very serious problem.

I wouldn't want to call the innocent victims of savvy con artists 'dumb'. Under informed, maybe.

I agree Coinfrog. These knockoffs get passed around and collectors get burned. E-bay has a good guarantee policy granted but should police unscrupulous sellers. Best to check sellers feedback, look for shipping time, overall look of coin and compare. A great deal isn't a sure deal. Would like to know if anyone here got burned from these trinkets.

Correct. Problem can only be solved from the input/listing end, and I have no idea how this could be accomplished. Otherwise, buyers will continue getting ripped. A virtually helpless situation as long as raw coins and inflated descriptions are easy to list.

Although there are a lot of China "junk" floating in the seas, there is a fair amount of eastern European nastiness, too, especially in the European coins.

But fakes are not new. In the 1950s you had to watch out for the added S on the 1909 VDB and the removed D on the 1922.

Brasher Dubloons have been faked since the later 19th century, as have almost all of the pre-1799 coinage.

A fair number of the fake Trade dollars were produced in the 60's.

So, yes, there is certainly a concerning number of fakes out there today, but it isn't something new.

Anyone have a gold plated 1883 No Cents nickel?

Yes I have one on my desk. ebay reimbursed me the $22 I spent on it. The buyer had feedback and listed Boston Ma as the ship point only later to realize he had hacked a UK user ID and shipped from China

@ jaxenro the clever China criminals have skills. Hacking skills, forgery skills, identity skills and shipping skills. Bet E-bay is losing alot of money.

Interesting isn't it. I doubt I could have a forgery made in this country as good as this and sell it on ebay for $22 and make a profit including setting up the hacked ID, getting the PayPal, and then shutting it all down and doing it over again. Time alone would eat up mt profits
