Don't believe the YouTube videos -- they're rigged for views. There is one video maker that I absolutely hate. And that's why I'm here on Coin Community instead of the other coin forums -- they allow him to spam and self promote all the time.

Funny you say that - I couldn't stand that "kid". He's the reason I'm here too. Glad CCF locked his account.

Silver in circulation is getting harder to find. I have no idea where you are, but if other coin roll collectors are in the area, they have probably already gone through a lot of the coins that are in the rolls you are looking at.

Halves and dimes are you best bet at silver then nickels. Quarters are very rare cause they're always in circulation and people pulled them out over the years.....whereas dimes and small and people don't see it, and halves are rarely used in circulation which is why people search them, I usually do $1500 per week, and usually find silver....if after a few weeks of nothing that's when I normally take a few month hiatus and move onto dimes.

As you have found out, it is not likely every box of halves will contain silver. Until my source of halves dried up (and the money I was using had to be put to a more legitimate use ) I was doing around 1K (less often 2K) a week. I could go through eight boxes sometimes w/out finding silver.

I also was searching for DDOs, RPMs and other variants though, so it was still fun. But something else to help gauge the reality of the situation. My bank aslo started charging 5.00 per box. Besides the aforementioned money going to more legitimate uses, I found that the majority of the time the 5.00 cannot be made back from the value of the coins found.

I just finished 500 dollars in halves and I did find 1 40% silver near the end. That did make it a little better! I did find a few a few coins to check for errors but nothing to keep though.

All depends what gets dumped in your area. Its possible (unlikely) that you'll never find silver ever again. Then again some grandma may cash in all those old coins shes had for years...

I went to the flea market today, I'm starting to see new vendors coming in just selling junk silver above the asking price. This one guy had a container filled with old Mercury dimes in pretty bad shape. I overheard him complaining about money problems. I felt like saying to the guy, "How about you dump all of that old silver back into the banks because it's not worth hoarding it." Most people in area aren't into coin collecting or hoarding silver and copper coins. I'm one of those collectors I keep coins that have a certain year on it.

I have been thinning out my hoards of extras and have put together this roll (see attachment) of Mercury dimes.
Would you take this roll to the bank, or to the local coin dealer?

@pocketchange2. You should really post your question in a new thread. Many (most?) people consider thread hijacking to be rude.

Franklin, you cant average out over 1 box. as been mentioned above people who have success search many boxes a week. to be successful at roll hunting there is only 1 rule: volume.

I've been through 3 boxes in the Detroit area and haven't found anything older than a 1971. I also believe some money companies (Brinks, etc.) pull out silver coins when they roll their coins so this could be a reason.
With that in mind, I did find this last night, a 1972-D with no FG, so that made up for not finding any silver out of that box :)
