I have another question about this and other Mint issues. Are the Kennedy halves that are sold in bags or rolls by the Mint considered the same as the uncirculated ones sold in the annual Uncirculated Mint set? The Mint's language would seem to indicate that they are different. Same is true for the quarters, Native American dollars and the Presidential dollars. If they are indeed different, then there would be 5 of each coin minted annually {P,D,S and P(bag/roll) and D(bag/roll)} and not 3. (Of course the Kennedy has a silver proof each year too.) Then would we need to find previous years' bag/roll issues to complete the sets?  |

You just blew my mind dude, hahaha. I listed the "Business" strike assuming those were the ones sent out by the mints solely in the roles and/or bag

according the the Red Book, "Not issued for circulation. Sold directly to the public in rolls and small bags" So does that mmean they are counting the special uncirculated sets WITH the circulated? |

There are technically no JFK halves minted for circulation after 2001. Anything 2002 to now (plus 1987) is an NIFC (not intended for circulation) coin. The "business strike" coins in these years are the same ones that the mint sold in rolls and bags to collectors. No need for another "circulation strike" coin.

Wait, is their really a D silver for 2014 other than the anniversary sets? I was under the impression the only Silver Kennedys post '92 were S Silver Proofs. (Again, aside from the anniversary sets)

@GateKeep This is what I'm looking at. For the anniversary set, The Denver mint did an Uncirculated Silver that was not a proof. You can see from this page, it is not mention. They do mention a Silver Proof but it is not part of the anniversary set. Not sure if this was a Red Book mistake.  |

The anniversary set contained: One reverse proof coin from the U.S. Mint at West Point One proof coin from the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia One enhanced uncirculated coin from the U.S. Mint at San Francisco One uncirculated coin from the U.S. Mint at Denver ******* The Red Book is referring to this coin. |

Okay, yeah.. there's a silver enhanced uncirculated D in the set. That makes sense, and the mintage for P and D being equal aligns with it being from the set. I have one of those, so it looks like if I get the two coin set (inexpensive) and the gold (ohh man!) I'll have them all from that year.
The 1998 Satin from the two-coin will be my only other "special" Kennedy issue missing. I've got <7 holes in my 8166/8167 set, and I've only been at it about 5 months or so! ;)

Keep in mind that the Denver Mint has never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever made a Proof coin. The only 2014 silver Kennedy from Denver is the enhanced uncirculated. This is NOT a Proof coin. There seems to be two big questions here. I will try to answer both of them as best I can. Keep in mind, I am wrong more often than not. First question: Are the coins sold in bags and rolls and released for general circulation different than the coins sold in the uncirculated sets? The short answer is, yes. It takes a very well trained eye to see the difference but it is there. The explanation would take much too long for me to write so just trust me on this one. The process is different for each type of coin, if you ever get a chance to tour the Denver Mint you can see it first hand (I took a tour last year). Business strikes and uncirculated strikes are made differently but that difference is so slight most collectors don't bother to notice. NICF does not make a difference either, there are still "Business strikes" and "Uncirculated Srikes". If you know how to read the Red Book you can get the mintages of each coin strike. Second question: How many strikes/issues are there for 2014? Again the fast answer is 13. This is how I count them 4 silver issue special finishes sold in the four coin set (P D S W) 2 clad issue special finishes sold in the two coin set ( P & D) 2 clad issue from Philadelphia, business and uncirculated strikes 2 clad issue from Denver, business and uncirculated strikes 1 clad issue from San Francisco Proof sold in the clad proof set 1 silver issue from San Francisco Proof sold in the silver proof set 1 gold issue from West Point sold by itself Hope this helps. |

OK...I think I've got it Let me ask one last question, is it normal to send a business strike in to be graded? I'm thinking the best way to find a nice clean Business strike is to buy the mint sets and send in to be graded and hope for the best. What ya think? |

Just to add more confusion to the list, in 2014 there are the low-relief (head of 2013) and high-relief (head of 2014, 50th anniversary) types. To build a complete set for 2014, a collector would also need the "head of 2013" type in addition to the high-relief 50th anniversary type. Coin World price list makes this distinction. But if just focusing on the 50th anniversary coins, then you can ignore the "head of 2013" type for year 2014 and just get the high-relief type using the 1964 portrait. Hope this adds to the confusion!! This is why coin collecting is so much fun. |
