At the coin expo, I noticed there were very few women around. I find it strange that this is such a guy hobby, since coins can be so beautiful. Is it just tradition--a hobby that has been passed by dads to sons going back to the days when women didn't deal much in commerce? It occurs to me that my grandpa didn't really share his love of coins with me or my mom, tho my uncle obviously collected. I caught the bug by going through his coins after he passed.

My wife would just have asked what gift for her I'd spend the coins I find on... Didn't marry her for her numismatic interests either.
Although I must say, she's the one who got it to a whole new level after she got tired of me just keeping all my coins in a large box and not actively doing anything with them. Fortunately she's also wise enough never to ask how much a coin costs.

During a recent customs re-entry interview I was asked about hobbies and personal interests. The young lady conducting the interview asked me more about my collection in 3 minutes than my wife has asked in the 20+ years we've been married. My wife is not a numismatist but she is an enabler who has her family searching CoinStar machines for me and from time to time surprises me with an item I've told her about.

I have often pondered this phenomenon. Men do tend to like the utilitarian forms of collecting (guns, Railroad, stamps, coins, tools), while women tend to prefer the items fabricated to be beautiful (or "cute") such as fine China, Hummels, Beanie Babies (when they were a thing), etc.
While there is always someone on either side of the fence who also likes both worlds of collecting, if we look around at the factual data, the patterns do exist. In fact these patterns have been a part of factual history as long back as time has been recorded.
Modern trends try to demonize people trying to point out these distinct differences within the two possible sets of chromosomal makeup. But no matter how hard someone may want to erase the facts, the wisdom of time proven/honored sayings such as "boys will be boys" always have been the majority pattern when boys are left to themselves.
Snakes and snails and puppy dog tails...
Sugar and spice and everything nice...
I also find when I meet someone who has the ability to appreciate things on both sides of the fence, they generally tend to be people who typically notice details others overlook. These same people I have met also seem to be more pensive about everything.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my wife for increasing my "threshold" amount each year before I "have" to ask her if I can buy it. She has absolutely no interest in coins, except to check if it's gold or silver.
Edit: I don't have to ask, but asking makes my life much peaceful.

My wife doesn't care about what I collect, but she supports me in my hobby. For example, we were at a coin show this past weekend and I had picked out two things and the dealer had given me a price for them (which I was actually happy with). Before we could finish the deal, another person came up and offered some gold coins to the dealer and he made him an offer, but the customer declined (my wife had seen this guy offering these coins to several other dealers earlier) and this started a conversation with the dealer and he started talking about how he likes to offer fair prices for things and mentioned how he thought the offer was a good deal. So my wife says, "OK, so what good deal are you going to offer us?". The dealer blinked, smiled, and knocked $10 off the two items I was buying and sold us an ounce of silver for spot. She supports me and my collection!

I'm single, so I don't have any of these problems.  But there is a girl I talk to a lot that has a polite interest in my hobby. She will sometimes ask me about what I have recently acquired and how my coin flipping is going. |

Haha my girlfriend doesn't quite understand this either. I think different people just have different interests and its just kind of funny in the end.
