Pending on where you got that one, might be worth sending it in. A bit costly but then you'ld know for sure and with that info, you might be able to return it.

It isn't the worst of fakes, but the inconsistency of the lettering is sufficient for an experienced numismatist (not necessarily even a Flying Eagle collector) to tell at a glance that it's counterfeit even in small images. Some species of counterfeit, like this one, display an inability to make letter strokes match adjacent letters and similar examples of the same letter, and cannot achieve the fine strokes present on "original" examples. It's most obvious in ONE CENT, but the obverse lettering is sufficient as well.

The coin has been artificially "weathered" to help obfuscate the discrepancies. This, too, is a common tactic.

The 6 is obviously wrong

the "trumpet "E" in STATES is wrong

the distintive oval "O" in OF isn't right either
Rest in Peace

What stood out to me is the eagles neck area.

Is it not that 1856 was struck as a proof?

Judging from the OP coin, the surface looks to clean for a coin of that age.

It's a one-look fake, but I think everyone has done a great job pointing out many discrepancies.

1856 comes in both proof and business strike. PCGS can't consistently tell the two apart so now they just call them all proofs. Don't know what NGC does.
