I came across a listing of a guy claiming this is a 1793 Liberty Cap cent: 192666208997. He insists he is certain of the date. I am not so sure. The seller seems like a newbie; his main fare is horrendous cull large cents like this, mostly in bulk lots, and the few decent coins he has listed are comically overgraded. He also has a questionable "1804" that is so atrocious I wouldn't particularly want it even if it turned out to be real. I can pick out a date wherever there is one on old corroded garbage EAC, and have scored to varying degrees a good many times doing so, but I can't identify much of anything telling on this one. I'm honestly not even sure if it's a Head of 93. Maybe someone with more experience in die diagnostics can chime in and tell me if this guy is full of it or not?

Your guess is a good as mine. I don't see how anyone can say they are certain of the date.

I don't think it is, although it might be a 94 head of 93. I'd really have to see it in hand.

Suggest to the seller that he gets it authenticated. That should slow him down.

This is really one of those coins at which you can only see the date at a certain angle when playing with a flashlight in hand, if the date is even there.

Doesn't even look like a head of 93 to me, but it is very hard to tell.

I'm not even looking at the date area, I'm trying to determine the position of TY with respect to the head. That would be definitive as to whether or not it is a 93.

I'll report this on the counterfeit forum as being misidentified. Given the pics, the seller cannot claim it to be a 1793. Here's the ebay coin with added contrast. It doesn't help.

For future use, where is that counterfeit forum? I can't find it in the directory.

Actually with the added contrast I believe I can make out the Y, and from that I can say it is NOT a 1793.

How do you opt in? I encounter fakes fairly often looking for good deals on key date coins and reporting them on CCF seems much more effective than reporting them to ebay.

1796- To opt in, you have to get in touch with bobbie. If you do get on, make sure you read the instructions on posting counterfeits. It is important that the proper format be followed in order to get them removed.
