The Brown Ike lens is the same one used for modern proof sets. Just the insert is different. You will build a set eventually. You know it.  |

Good finds and good purchases!
I still remember getting them in the change when I was a kid.
I love getting them because of their size.
My brother used to run home just to get me to go to this certain shop where the guy gave them out in the change. Just for me.

I can recall getting halves and SBA dollars in changes up to 1985ish. Ike dollars, by then, was disappearing quickly. From time to time, they do turn up at the banks or at the coin shops--sometimes a dealer would give them to me. "Drummer Boy" quarters were plentiful back then as well. I kept few of them and I also have a special Bicentennial Coin set consists of Quarter, Half Dollar and Dollar in proof silver (not pure silver). Many friends who know me often thought I would be interested in these bicentennial coins. I have to educate them that they are not that valuable unless they are silver or in much better condition (grades),etc... Very rarely, they would turn up with something different. My mum still remember using halves in her youth. Whereas my dad remember old pre-decimal British coinage, he loves telling me old prices in old money known as L.S.D. (pound.shilling.pence/penny). One time I got a silver nickel in a change---the elderly gentleman would not take it from me and he paid for gum for me himself so I could keep a silver nickel. I did not understand him until my Dad explained about it to me. These days were good--I am telling you! |

You seem to have a pretty broad knowledge base of coins and currency which, is unusual in a good way. Are you Irish? Yes, I was referring to a U.S. Second World War Nickel. To answer your question, since you so kindly share the family photos with us here, I am happy to tell you. I am a British-born Irish American. I often jokingly tell people that I was born in a wrong country namely England. Yes, on my mum's side, her family hailed from County Cork. :) Not only that, my Dad is from north of Ireland and we still have heaps of family there and all over the UK. You do have a better knowledge of American coins than I do.  All of us have different knowledge here and there. :) I have learnt something new from your posts. Edited by Carrigna
