Sources put this at the $215-$220 range if gold stays roughly where it's at now. That's quite a premium for $135 worth of gold. I opted out of the 4 coin set, not feeling like I need this one either, though it does look nice.

It does look nice. I would love to have it, but buying the four medal set stung last year, this would sting more.  |

If this coin were available today, with spot currently between $1350 and $1400, it would be priced at $220. You can see how the price would vary by using the Mint's 2018 pricing grid for gold and platinum products. |

Looking at that grid tells me I won't be buying gold from the mint anytime soon.

^ The premiums charged by the US Mint are fairly modest in comparison to other mints (Perth Mint, Royal Canadian Mint to name only two). Granted, mintage figures are much higher for the US Mint. I guess no one forces anyone to buy anything... |

Anyone buying this today. I could probably part with $215 to keep my liberty collection up, but not sure it would be worth it. I've only purchased the silver versions so far since gold is too high for me. This one is more reasonable but the premium above spot seems pretty big.

But gold will break out at any moment!  But that's what they said about bit too. If I had an extra $215 laying around, I'd pick it up just to say I have a gold coin. Don't have one yet. |

I'll pass for now. Since this coin isn't specifically authorized by Congress  , but instead relies on 31 U.S.C. Section 5112 (I)(4)(C) Quote:
The Secretary may continue to mint and issue coins in accordance with the specifications contained in paragraphs (7), (8), (9), and (10) of subsection (a) and paragraph (1)(A) of this subsection at the same time the Secretary in minting and issuing other bullion and proof gold coins under this subsection in accordance with such program procedures and coin specifications, designs, varieties, quantities, denominations, and inscriptions as the Secretary, in the Secretary's discretion, may prescribe from time to time. there is no way of telling whether or not this will be an annual issue, or if it is, then how long it will be an annual issue. Any Treasury Secretary can change or stop it as they desire, unless Congress steps in and actually directs it to be minted. According to my 2018 Large Print RedBook pg. 379, the Mint's plan (at least for the 1 ozt coin) is that Quote:
The series is slated to continue biennially, with a new design being issued every two years. In the years between gold issues, silver medals featuring the same designs will be issued. but the Mint doesn't appear to be following that plan as the silver medals were issued last year, along with the gold coin, and this year we get this 1/10 ozt gold coin instead of the "planned" silver medals. The Red Book doesn't cite where they got the Mint "plan" from, but I assume they had a current source at the time they published it. All-in-all, the information about this coin is just too sketchy for it to be collectable for me. So, like I said, I'll pass for now. Edited by BadDog

I'm going to be a pass on this issue, at least I say that now. We'll see what the ol' tax refund looks like this year and then make the final call. |

This Sunday, there is a monthly one day coin show that is close. Its probably too early for them to be in dealer's hands, but I might stop by to see if they have a 2018 ASE at least.  |
