Looks heavily cleaned and/or polished to me. It really bugs me when TPGs straight grade such obviously cleaned coins. A big reason to buy a slabbed coin is so you know it's authenic and not cleaned so this practice on older coins is very deceptive to the buyer. I guess 90%+ of pre-1900 coins are cleaned so maybe they straight grade so coins in their holders seem more valuable.

That's definitely not market acceptable. I can't figure out how the graders at NGC could miss this.

Always remember that the grading companies have an advantage. They had the pleasure of viewing this coin in hand. We do not. When put under harsh light, issues will be exasperated. You can scream at the top of your lungs about it being harshly cleaned, but without viewing it in hand, I tend to side with grading companies. NGC deemed this coin as market acceptable after viewing it in hand. |

There's a reason the coin sold way under market, not only is it hideously ugly, it's been harshly cleaned. Shame on NGC.
If this is "market acceptable" then I must not be part of the market since I sure don't consider it acceptable to be in a straight-graded holder.

I'm not a big fan of NGC, but I would bet it's not as bad as those pictures are making it look. That said the grade does seem to be a bit generous.

There are so many red flags on this coin visible just from the photos (I.e. the uneven surfaces, uneven color, uneven wear.) Pretty much uneven everything. And considering the price it sold for I would say the other people (buyers) noticed that as well. Lots of things that don't look to be from average circulation. |

 with Mike. Eye appeal is the problem, not the technical grade. Grading from any photos is no comparison to in hand grading. |

I've noticed one thing common with some pieces with NGC. Note the location of the seller. Sarasota, FL. Hmmm I wonder where NGC is....you guessed it Sarasota. I've noticed they've been more than generous with several coins that originate on ebay from Sarasota. You wonder if there is any hometown bias going on? It is very possible local shops and dealers drop the coins off and get an extra benefit because they're local. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this was the case. |

Not sure how I feel about this one. It is not "growing on me" like they typically do, so I would probably pass even though it was within my budget.
