The red coin, for two reasons:

1. With the attractively toned coin, where the patina has thinned, the possibility of wear is present, no matter how minor it may be. These pictures are not able to reveal if there is any wear or not, but if there is any, it is certainly very minimal on the high points.

2. Beautiful toning is a transitory stage between red and full dark chocolate, which this coins seems to he heading for.
If the patina is very dark, the design becomes harder to see.
I often have this problem with otherwise attractive ancient bronze coins with a black patina.

It is my hope that both of these coins are in truly airtight holders; they both deserve it.

If they are both graded as MS++ coins, then thinning of the patina should not really be an issue.

I would love to look at both of these coins in hand with a high powered loupe, checking carefully for:
a) wear on the high points,
b) quality of strike,
c) luster (underlying on the toned coin).
My preference could change with more detailed information in this regard.

I'd take the 64 for both the uniqueness of the color and the small motto variety.

BigSilver has identified the reason why the choice of the '64 is a 'no brainer'

I have no choice except to agree with that.

I like the first one better personally. I'm very picky when it comes to toning so the first one just appeals more to me.

Well, as a toner guy, of course I'm gonna like the 64. That aside, the carbon spot on the 65 just kills it for me.

I will have the blue one coming in a day or two and will post in hand cell phone pics. The red one will be here in the not to distant future.

I really like the colour on the 1864 one, so that coin gets my vote!
