XF details, likely cleaned (though most of the scratches are probably on the holder).

One of my favorite US coin types; hope to get one of those eventually (in much lower grade, obviously).

Nice, but would likely get tagged cleaned. Graffiti in the right obverse field may also end up on a hypothetical holder.

I'd like to see it out of the holder to truly grade it details or not. Its certainly a well struck coin but these photos don't tell much.

Nice find! I have never has an 1853 half dollar that nice!

As for grade, I am hoing to say VF-35 details. It has been harshly cleaned, with graffiti on the obverse. There are weird outlines around the stars. Anyone have an idea on what caused those? I have never seen them before.

"Halos" can often be found around the stars, digits in the date, arrowheads, and often around the central devices. Sometimes unofficially called "Longacre
doubling," a term coined by J.T. Stanton and inappropriately applied by others to Liberty Seated coinage designed by Christian Gobrecht, it is the doubling often seen on coins designed by James B. Longacre.

This is an insert from from Bill Bugerts volume IV of "A Register of Liberty Seated half dollar Varieties".

Quote:
This doubling is a secondary image of the design appearing on all sides of a design element. Although various theories abound as to what caused this doubling, this doubling is commonly found on half dollars of this date and is not and should not be confused with doubled dies and repunched dates. I believe this doubling was caused when the temporary master die was heavily impressed with all the design elements such that a halo became part of the temporary master die. Consequently, these halos transferred to the working hub, subsequent working dies, and finally the half dollars themselves. Most early die state 1853-Os regardless of die marriage can be found with this halo characteristic and I do not discuss this doubling characteristic with each die marriage.

Huh. My gut said that is what it was, but I asumed it wasn't because the seated half was designed by Gobrecht. I learned something new!

Tootallarious thank you for rotating it for me.
I just could not figure out how to when I was posting the photos.
I know with complete certainty that if this was cleaned it was not by my grandfather.
He was a stickler for originality.
I do know that the majority of the coins from his collection were tucked away since the 1950's from what I was told by my grandmother & from what he explained to me.
I just came across a Seated half dime that looks like it was struck yesterday.
I have quite a few I would really like to have graded & slabbed.
Honestly I have never had any grades before.
Is there a way to get a group graded for a better price.
From what I understand it isn't cheap.
But I'm coming across some
incredible coins that in my opinion should be graded.
I just opened a box of 1/2cent, Large one cent, & 2 cent coins, some in quite AMAZING condition.
I just wish I had more time to inventory types, dates, quantities etc.
Some of which I have 2 or 3 of each.
If anyone can share some knowledge of the best way to grade I would appreciate it.
I just really need to start going through everything & sorting but I must have at least a 500 coins to go through & God only knows what's in there.
My feeling is each coin needs to be carefully inspected before it is just assumed it is a regular coin with no errors etc.
Thanks again, I truly appreciate it.
