a ASE is a ASE as long as its silver

So many issues with this brief statement. For starters, if it's not silver, it's not an ASE.

And that may be how YOU feel about ASEs, but it's not remotely true.

Sorry to dogpile but off-the-cuff, uninformed statements like that are misleading.

This.

Statements like that are my biggest pet peeve. If people want to express their feelings that's their choice but it should be made clear it is just their feelings. Making those statements that can mislead readers when the market clearly dictates otherwise and has for a long time deserved to get slapped down in my opinion.

...so I will state this again, maybe a little more clearly, I hope, and maybe someone will know what i'm talking about eventually.

i have both the 2018-W and the -S. I set them side by side and look at them. the devices- particularly lady liberty on the obverse and eagle on the reverse- appear to be somewhat more flat in finish— more matte-looking— on the W than those on the S. liberty & eagle on the S looks to be a bit more polished, they're just a bit shinier. can't get decent pix of what i'm talking about so I leave it to all of you to examine yours side by side. it is just something I noticed and is likely not a big deal.

my own feelings of two proof issues every year have nothing to do with the observation, but is basically this: from a stacker point of view, it's more silver, glad to have it. from coin collector point of view, I don't care for the additional proof coin every year. it's needlessly redundant. the 2018-S ASE doesn't light my fire. that's just how I feel, just my opinion. I guess sales will guide the mint. someone mentioned in an earlier post that it's possible the mint has not read the sales of the 2017-S correctly. I think that's very likely the case, but that is also just an opinion.

@morgans... we get you. You're fine. Some of us do read all the words and puncutation here.

@MrPink... I tried to take photos but I don't have a rig capable of highlighting any differences. I will try a visual inspection again when my eyes aren't quite so tired but I didn't see much of a difference between W and S initially.

BTW...Liberty Coin is at it again this time with proof 2018 W's and S's for less than Mint price. I will go out on a limb and say these have been searched like the burnished W's offered earlier. Go for it if you want to take a chance.

Resurrecting an old thread BUT just a FYI...the 2018-S ASE proof has been on the "Currently unavailable" list for a few days...is it sold out or are they cranking the presses?

If sold out the mintage will be low for a proof (compared to the yearly W's) ..presently at 158K plus the 50k in the LESP sets

I was just looking at the sales figures posted on Coin news and noticed there were 4000 sales of the "W" vs 1600 of the "S" for that week. Did the "S" just sell out or has the "W" just always been more popular?

A few things:

1) not sure if it is sold out or just "currently unavailable" but it is not listed as backordered...

2) I noticed the change in status early this week. It could have changed in the week prior...thus the lower numbers

3)(most likely) A lot of collectors (me) gave this coin a major "meh" because of the unlimited mintage but I think the Mint might have pulled a "created interest" moment and just minted around 200k total for both product options

4) no guarantee that they won't show up again in a week or two...but...a week or two (or three) is also enough time to change to "sold out" if the sales all clear
