They are talking about whether a coin found in circulation can technically grade Mint State or not. Some think so, some don't.

Killian76, I will elaborate. I am a coin purist when it comes to grading. That means I have a set delineation of what constitutes a circulated coin as contrasted to a Mint State graded as Mint issued. There may be a fine line there, everyone must choose what ad where the division is. I maintain that once a coin has left the mint, whether on roll, bag or plastic, then comes into the circulation world to be handled by at least one human set of hands, it then is seen to be crossing "the berm" (War term...).

By defining your source as wrapped bank rolls with miscellaneous dates, that puts those coins by basic usage as a circulated coin, even if it has all luster and few marks. Accurately graded coins must reflect all aspects of a coins state as well as provenance (where it came from and how).

Transport, storage, coin contact all have to be taken into account. In 1964 coins were sent in 10,000 coin canvas bags to be distributed by Federal Reserve banks/affiliates. These then sent the bags, or rolls then to all the banks within their region. These rolls contained the same date/MM coins. This then entered at this point the circulation stream. Enter in human contact(skin oils etc.) and other sorting means, other storage mediums, air, pollutants, you name it at that stage. Now true, your coin may have come from Grandma's jar, put up in '65, bit it's still a circulated coin and by right, can be called "almost uncircilated" bit not "mint state".

This is how I treat all my coins. I too have come across nice ones like yours many times. They are ALL AU58+,but never will I call them MS-XX. I own true OBW rolls, that which came from Fed distribution bags, and have rolls of "mixed date AUs, that came from various sources, even suspect OBWs.

you make up your own mind about this, you will over time, but us old farts have to have some issue to poke at one another! It's like the "penny" or "cent" debate, it is a personal preference, not industry rule.

*Cents* . Anyway that 64 looks pretty darn nice but you did find it CRH'ing . So I have to agree with Crazy . my call : AU-58+ .
