Quote: All coins are worthy of love, no matter what we call them. I love my stacks of junk silver - one, you can touch junk silver without worrying about leaving a mark; two, the heft of big stack of silver is pretty impressive and three; they have an inherent value that modern junk coins do not. Don't you just love the sound and feel of junk silver in your hand? Me too!

Boy, what a sound! How I love to hear that old money plink! That beautiful sound of cold, hard cash. That beautiful, beautiful sound.

Quote: "junk"? I think not. I just think everyone should lay off that term . Thanks for listening I agree with you completely. However, please remember that not all people have good Cents. Even on this forum you will get some people that just don't know how to say good things about anything. Yes those are the ones that would say almost any coin is just not up to their standards so it must be junk. Imagine what a great world this would be if every one said only good things about everything.

There is a difference between "cull" silver coins and "junk" silver coins in the market place. Cull coins are those badly damaged and not collectible. "Junk" silver coins (market term) can be collected by date and mint and are just very common circulated coins with only silver value. When buying junk silver 90% coin rolls, most people do not want cull coins included. Dealers buy these below spot/melt price.

What an interesting thread ; Look , in my honest opinion if a silver coin is crappy enough to not fit into my collection then I call it junk silver and in my special box labeled Junk Silver it goes . However I'm good with anyone who don't agree with me .To each his own and we all have our preference and opinions on the definition of junk silver . So call it what ever you want , just don't try to sell me it and saying it's an EF or AU .

Many junk silver coins are in fact EF or AU, they are just common enough dates that their value tracks spot closely.

Very true. "Junk" is just age-old industry jargon that will never go away. Best to accept that and not get offended if a poster refers to your coin in that obvious context.

Case in point: this coin was dubbed as "junk" by one member because it had a minor scratch on the reverse. Its silver value at that time was 0.44 cents. I sold it on ebay for $2,200.00 plus postage. So much for the way the term "junk" is used. By the way - Nice coin!

I'd take a cull large cent over a junk silver coin.

I wouldn't call the coin posted in the opening poster's topic "Junk". It's value isn't close to the silver content and it is not unattractive or badly mutilated despite the fact that it has some issues that may deter some collectors. That being said I strongly feel that we should not censor forum members from being honest in situations that require it so that new collectors can learn and grow in their pursuit of the hobby. Just use tact in telling members about problems. I personally want a honest assessment of the coins I post so that can reflect on whether I made a good purchase and then make adjustments if needed I don't want things sugarcoated.

Quote: Is constitutional silver another name for junk silver? Constitutional silver would apply mainly to US silver coins. I suppose it's normally used for common US coins worth approximately melt value.

Quote: Is constitutional silver another name for junk silver? In the context I've heard: Yes. A lot of silver stackers on YouTube seem to use the term "constitutional silver" often.
