Quote:I know a lot of people have this sentiment. You don't "qualify" if you only collect State Quarters. I did not intend to imply that they were inferior coin collectors, they just do not collect other coins. Neither person considers themselves coin collectors, so it cannot be said that I was insulting them. Despite my attempts, they are not interested in the hobby; the collector "bug" has not bitten them (yet). They just got a folder from their bank and started filling holes. Not that this is somehow wrong since everyone starts somewhere. Had either of them responded to my attempts to engage them in numismatic conversation, I would have made a different comment. In the end, it is whatever makes them happy, so I really have no complaints. Quote: What magical threshold must one cross to become a member of the coin collecting brotherhood/sisterhood? I often say it happens when you buy that first book or have that first real conversation with someone about the passion, but in reality each person is different and the "magic" just happens.

In all honestly, I would have to say that the several "State Quarter-only" collectors that I know personally, that they are not 'coin collectors' in the traditional sense because they are collecting them for their offspring and other relatives, and they are not collecting any type of coins for themselves (not even the State Quarters, ironically!). I'm certainly no 'snob', but I do think that for someone to be a 'coin collector' (in the traditional sense of the term), that they would have to have a personal collection of coins, for their own enjoyment (not just saving coins on behalf of offspring and relatives!). Indeed, many of the " State Quarter savers" may in fact become 'coin collectors' because of all this... I was much more of a 'coin hoarder' than a 'coin collector' until recently. I know an 'Ike Hoarder' with over 3000 Ikes pulled from circulation, and a 'Wheatie Hoarder' with thousands of those in jars! The 'true hoarders' hoard circulated coins of a beloved but common type, of which only a few particular varieties may be 'rare' (the State Quarters are prime 'hoarding' material, especially after 2010 ... ) I do enjoy that you can simply pluck nice State Quarters from circulation and put them in folder holes, staying true to the roots of this hobby.

Collect P & D from circulation only, mainly because they are different. Been collecting coins for almost 19 years, but do know people who began their first collection with the State Quarters. Do not care in the least if they will ever be worth anything. The value I get from them is the fun of collecting and looking at all the different designs. Also grabbing those funny looking nickels and the Presidential dollars...new cent when it gets out. Don't give as gifts or want as a gift. Geez - it's only a quarter.

1. Do you collect singles out of circulation, or do you get BU rolls from banks and coin shops? Both - I have bought some new rolls from the bank and pull coins from circulation for myself and my kids. 2. Do you go for evey quarter or just your favorite designs? Every coin 3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters? Have every silver proof or proof set as I collect those also. 4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs? 5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series? I've used the program to get my kids interested in coins. My oldest just finished searching a $25 box of pennies for the wheats and pre-82s. 6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts? Gave a starter set to my daughter for christmas to get her interest going.

OK so as noted how about some info. Or is this just for fun. Actually not a bad question if for fun and interest. I really don't care if you make a million selling stories to magazines but would like to know of some that you have written for. How about the names of some articles and the magazines you work for? Just how are you planning on using the info from this post? Not to be to nosey but way to many people ask for info and then only twist it to suit themselves. How about letting us all know about the article this post is going to form and where your going to send it? Would be nice for all forum members to be able to read the results of this situation.

I started collecting these for my daughters because, ironically enough, they were learning their states and capitals. Then I got the bug and I have several sets. Now, 'my' book gets the first shot at being filled. 1. Do you collect singles out of circulation, or do you get BU rolls from banks and coin shops? I like getting singles out of circulation; it makes the 'hunt' more enjoyable, But soon I hope to start trading with several people for Denver mints. 2. Do you go for every quarter or just your favorite designs? every one and probably will go for the 'Territories' set too 3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters? No 4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs? I don't know, Mississippi and Oklahoma are really nice and I like Vermont. (Reminds me of reading 'Little House in the Big Woods' by Wilder when I was a little girl.) 5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series? Yes, my daughters now also collect the presidents and other dollar coins (Ike's, Sacagawea's, etc.) 6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts? Yep! It is really cool to give them as stocking stuffers; especially when it is one my daughters' have been searching for. They will completely overlook the expensive watch to go and put their 'gift quarter' in its place.

First, here is my post to Alaska Quarter topic: Where Is The Alaska State Quarter? I've been asking at local banks since September first, five different banks, a few times each week, but nothing. No Quarter Given! Then last week (Sept 24), a head teller said, "the Federal Reserve ordered that quarters be given to armored cars for distribution October first." This week => no quarters. Yesterday, OCT 3, a teller said, the Fed would not give them to Brinks 'til next week, so, try Thursday or Friday (OCT 9 or 10). Officially, quarters are to come out every 10 weeks, and https://www.usmint.gov listed the AK Quarter in circulation (released August 25, at the Alaska State Fair the 29th). So, some questions: Why the delay? How can the Federal Reserve tell the USMINT what to do? The Alaska Quarter could help Sarah Palin and if the final coin, Hawaii, is pushed into late November, would that hurt Obama who has Hawaii connections? Businesses and collectors want the full set as gifts for the Holiday shopping season. Delaying Hawaii will hurt the USMint's sales and disappoint everyone who wants a complete State Quarter set. OK, now why collect them? Historical value, they do have artwork related to state history. Arts & Crafts, I'm making pendants with the more attractive ones: Montana steer skull, Kansas Buffalo matched with the Indian Head Nickel, New Mexico's Zuni Sun and Texas' Lonestar. Those are the few that have large, simple designs which you can easily see on a necklace.

Banks order coins as they need them. If your area has an ample supply of quarters then none of your local banks will order any. The head teller that said "the Federal Reserve ordered that quarters be given to armored cars for distribution October first." doesn't know what they are talking about. Maybe the bank order they placed wouldn't arrive until the first of Oct. When each State Quarter is released for ciculation they are usually available, but not at all bank. Major cities usually see them first then the outlining areas. As for the State Quarters helping either canidate....I'm sorry but that's just too funny!
