Oh crap , now I have to check all of my 11-S Lincolns . Dargone-It, it's always something that coin collectors have to look out for .

I forgot all about that. Some of us are just slow to learn, I guess. Quote: Oh crap , now I have to check all of my 11-S Lincolns I got mine around 30 years ago when he was worth less than ten dollars. I am not that worried.

Hummmm....interesting coin. I too lean toward a fake it is so weakly struck and the date is questionable. I've seen other years of Chinese fakes that look similar.

Late to the discussion, but the serpentine S MM immediately sent up an instant flag with me as well. I am suspecting clear photos with direct light would show a porous nature to the surface as well.

I have contacted ebay about a return since the coin is a counterfeit. Four days later and I have not yet heard back from the seller. I do have this question. If it is a counterfeit can I legally return it in the U.S. mail?

So you have formally opened a case in the Resolution Center? If so, and the seller has not replied after 4 days, then ebay should be processing a return. You can always go to the Res Center, click on your case and indicate that's you've not received a reply. Not a problem returning a coin from a cancelled sale.

I opened the return request on August 22 but the message from ebay says that if I don't hear from the seller by August 28 I can contact them and ask them to step in.

ebay will pay you back, no worries. Since the seller is MIA, I'd wouldn't mail it back unless ebay tells you to. Personally, I'd make a youtube showing me cutting a key date in half. LOL That said, I would 100% validate it's fake by taking to a local coin shop and getting a second opinion. You get the best scrutiny if you offer to sell it to them. It's a key coin, with any experienced dealer - they'll let you know if it's fake, especially if they're opening their wallet. I've seen some strange 11-S's over the years - real ones. The branch mint was still learning and dependent on philly for dies. To meet production quotas, the branch mints pushed their dies to the bitter end and through 1928 or so, they made a lot of weak coins.

Thanks, BadThad. Unfortunately, my local coin shop owner retired last year, but that's not a bad idea. The weight is 3.16 grams. Is that within tolerance for an authentic Wheat cent? Red Book says it should be 3.11 grams. I'm not holding out hope it's authentic, but the three other U.S. fakes I know I bought (Seated Liberty Dollar, Standing Liberty quarter and Flying Eagle cent) were all quite a bit underweight. This one is pretty close.

I never heard from the seller, so I contacted ebay and they immediately decided in my favor. I've printed off a return shipping label and the coin will be returned tomorrow. Thanks again for all the helpful information on this coin. I am staying away from 1911-S Lincoln Cents FOREVER!!
