could have been a mark at the end of a roll.

I ran into the same problem here in S.W. Michigan. I was searching Kennedy half dollars and had a bunch of rolls that had a red marker hit on them. It was a shame some of them were very nice. But I guess the person that did it was just looking for silver.

OK. So I poured about 1 inch on fresh acetone into a glass wide-mouthed jar. As soon as I placed the coin in I saw a small black cloud lift off the coin, but the mark was still as it was. So I let it soak for 10 minutes, gave it a few swirls, a little lighter. Let sit 1/2 hour, little lighter. Filled a small spray bottle with the acetone and lightly sprayed the coin and presto! Gone. There are some small traces that can be seen with a 14x loupe, but good enough for me. I didn't want to scrub the coin with a toothbrush or anything. I'm not sure if the marker actually removed the toning when applied or if it has been there for some time, but you can see where the marker was. I really don't see any difference in the coin. Photos may look different because of the lighting. Thanks for your help. It was a good experiment.

Check out the pics

Nice work. Did the acetone lighten the coin a bit?

Wow ! That worked out great, can't tell it was ever there from the picture. I was thinking it might leave a pattern/splotch in the metal. I had one that had gum or candy stuck to it. Soaked it and finally it came off, but left a splotch pattern where on the metal where the gum/candy used to be.
Really happy you had such a great success.
