He is still new to collecting so he doesn't have a preference but I prefer to buy him something that has a market ,and won't lose value but may increase , I prefer to buy him a single coin not a set .I don't have a preference of old or new or slabbed or not .

do you know his interests/hobbies.. there are a lot of different images stamped on silver rounds or bars ,superman,pot leaf corona virus war vets etc.....and I dont know any coin collector that doesn't like silver

To properly answer your question it might be a good idea to see what your friend has the most interest in.
As there are many avenue's you could go I think gold or silver bullion would be the way to go unless they have a special interest in a certain area of the hobby.
I personally collect Canadian Large cent coins from 1858 - date.

I may take flak for this. You can go with the Can. Mint and get a nice coin, or you can go with the aftermarket and get a much nicer coin for the same $.

For a new collector I would consider a silver dollar. For $100 you can find a 1949 in MS65.

If you want to get something that has a bit of an investment angle I would get 5 interesting silver dollars for near bullion value. Say 1939 1949 1958 1964 1967 in common grades.

Maybe a nice large cent, you should be able to pickup up a common year in MS without much trouble. They are old, different than what we have today and a nice entry point to collecting. It is a very approachable type of coin that can be completed for a reasonable price.

The silver dollar idea is good. Another idea is a nice vintage type set, perhaps from the 1930s or 40s.

In 2018 I have a friend that turned 100 I didn't know what to give someone for a birthday gift, what do you give someone that's 100 years old.
Long story short I gave him a jar of strawberry Rhubarb jam with 6 suckers around it and an 1918 large cent in Au condition he was a happy kid
