It's gotten fairly straightforward....
As funds allow, the best available Liberty Head half eagle under $800, or eagle under $1200. Emphasis on scarcity and branch mints over condition and specific dates. The last one was a 1857-S half eagle in VF20 slabbed.
Coins like these used to be priced much lower, and were fairly easy to find, but not so much anymore.

Any classic coin with a cool or attributable counterstamp is attractive to me ....  Walton's Bitters was an alcohol-based remedy, that was popular in the early 1870's. The more you drank, the more attractive things seemed ....
