I collect mainly American Innovation Dollars and like others keep Sacs and Native American dollars that are in AU or, if possible, MS just released into the wild. I rarely collect Presidential dollars - I just get them when I buy old Mint or Proof sets or the Annual Uncirculated Dollar sets the US Mint used to sell on and off from 2007 - 2016. And SBAs only if I get it from a mint set (one exception the 1981 SBAs which are available only in Proof and Mint sets, my parents bought 5 or 6 mint sets which I found the best of the P,D and S). But to reiterate mainly the American Innovation Dollar.

And like another poster, when I can afford it, I get the real gold dollar coins which were produced from about 1849 to 1889. Interesting series, good premium, and there are many years that are reasonable for the mintage you get (or conditional mintage as many produced in the millions were melted for the Civil War and during the Reconstruction period mintages were very low at times). TO start, try those from 1849 - 1854 (Type I) from the Philly mint. Most affordable ones. Those from Charlotte and Dahlonega mint, due to the tiny mintages and low survival rate, are expensive. Worth getting one if you are disciplined enough to save for some time.

You can go to any bank and ask for an unopened roll. Tell them it's a gift for a kid and they give it to you with a smile. That said...

I used to do the same thing as you! LOL A place I used to work at gave those back when you put in $5.

Make sure you protect your coins VERY well from air. Nice ones will tarnish quickly! GOOD LUCK

Hello

I used to collect coins as a child and got reinterested when the Statehood Quarters came out

Over the years I upgraded my complete collection to Silver Proof coins (90% Silver) and just ordered the CAPS album system for them

Now I am interested in the "newer" dollar coins (SACs Presidents NA and the AI), but I have a few questions

Did they ever mint them in 90% silver?

I can find uncirculated proof (S) Presidential sets on ebay, is it worth it to buy them for 2-3 per coin?

Some of the complete Presidential sets have 39 coins with a 3 coin holder for the last set and others have 40 coins all in 4 coin holders, why is that?

What's the deal with the Native Americans set?

Thanks

Now to read the other topics on this forum until I pass out

None of the newer dollars. Sacs, Presidents, NA and inovations are made in silver.

I paid $5.19 for a slabbed 2019 NA proof and the only president dollar I have is in my type set, I paid $4 a few years ago.

So you can assume about $5-$10 each coin.

I don't collect these so I'm assuming no hard to get coins $60-$120 for the NA coins and ~200/300 for the presidents.

Edit, my dealer has a set (not all 40 though) presidents in a Dansco he wants $200, so above seems realistic.

Best to check ebay sold values for a current realistic value.

Dollars are fun for all the varieties and designs at play, that and I just enjoy collecting what I view as an underdog coin. It's nice to hunt something not for silver and not for one specific wheat back reverse, but for literally anything else.

There is a huge swing in "sold" prices for the dollars on ebay

Presidential proofs seem to average about $4

Sacs are about the same

But NA proofs go for $8-$15 each

The mint seems like the best place to get the AI proof dollars

I have a complete set of Sacagawea/Native American dollars (with the exception of the gold Sacagawea). The set includes the annual issuances by year (PDS), enhanced coins, proof and reverse proof coins, and variations (Cheerios dollar, Goodacre dollar, wounded eagle dollar, experimental rinse, etc.). I assembled the set through online purchases. After I was caught up, I bought annual sets (PDS and any variations). It's a great series -- I especially like the different designs each year, each one commemorating some aspect of Native American culture.

My NGC Registry Sacagawea set is at 97% complete (still waiting for this year's proof); even though it's only ranked as No. 22 because buying 'top pops' ain't my thing...

I've titled the set "Jean Baptiste Charbonneau's Mom."
