Hey gsp. The 1972-S is difficult, at best, to describe due to how the mint produced these coins. The San Fran mint made both Proofs and 'Uncirculated' strikes in 1972. Is yours in a blue colored packaging? If so, it is considered a collectors "edition" coin and technically not a Proof. With that said, I'm not sure that VV has differentiated between these two types of strikes regarding doubled dies (if it even matters). Your coin does appear to be a doubled die, I can see some notching, but is difficult to tell which one IMHO. It is hard to take pics through a holder/cover no doubt. Is this coin in a holder by itself?

Hey Bumpkin, thanks for looking it is in the hard plastic case, I bought an unopened box of 5 brown Ikes and this is the only one that looks like this...The other four all look exactly like the other one I posted.

Better pics there and more visible notching is apparent. As far as which variety it is...... that I do not know from the pics. To me, the ones listed on VV are very similar in appearance to one another so without having coin in hand it would be really hard to make a definitive call on yours, especially without knowing the markers. Sorry.

You need to diffuse the image to remove the glare show the spread will show better. Glare hides what you see that we don't see. Make sure to use a single light source as it allows light and shadows. With more sources light, the shadows go away and the light floods the images.

Thanks Bumpkin and coop. I am using one light with two pieces of paper over the end. I will have to try and figure something else out. Thanks for looking!

Try two or one paper and one plastic grocery bag. Just don't let the two touch the light source, then you might have a fire. More of a curtain. that allows the light through, but diffused.
When you mention one light source, is there multible bulbs in the source? If so that defeats the single light issue by removing the light and shadow affect. Also unwanted light source can defeat the light and shadows affect. Room lights, outside window lights. Best to put you hands around the coin to see the direction a secondary source can be coming from. The even the center of the tube could block out unwanted directional lights.

Just need to find out the direction and remove it from hitting the coin when taking images.

Thanks coop I will try and make a new setup. I have been using a hand held light that I tape paper to the end and turn off microscope light and room light (if those light sources are reflecting too much or causing too much glare)

That image of TRU shows the notching on the upper right bar of the T pretty well. It looks like it is tripled.

I have to agree on the tripling, as I can see that now as well.

Are you using a ramp? (The Ramp is a 2X2 with dark material on the outer edges. On the center I use 1-2 pieces of cardboard) That will help get a better view into the ocular:
1972-S-Eisenhower-Dollar.--I-Believe-This-Is-DDO-004-Pr-4-0-Ii-C-4
I have my setup with the light as 12:00 and the ramps widest part at 6:00:

The light from from source, angles off the ramp into the scope. If I need to change the coins direction, I move the coin, not the ramp. The angles work great for my setup. Turning the ramp will make them darker. But at the right angles, the coin will have a golden color. Then I know I have it correct.

No I have thpught of that that is great information Coop Thankyou! I have not had a chance to try and figure something out yet I did get an 18% gray background and I am going to try to figure out a different light. Even diffused mine still glares. I will definitely try the ramp! Great idea!
