interesting, what about the SW-NE lines that appear raised above the surface, are those just metal pushed up from an adajcent area of the coin?

There are no raised lines. These are simply areas that were less abraded than the grooves that separate them.

Mike, when you say grooves, it sounds like you're talking about the SE to NW lines. Instead I'm talking about what appear to be raised lines running SW to NE.

I assume you're referring to the fine lines. These are hairline scratches.

Thank You, Mr. Diamond for all of your efforts on this one. I look forward to the Coin World writeup and to see what conclusions you may reach. It's really wonderful to have you as an active member of the Coin Community Family.

Hello Everyone, here is the update on the Quarter. Mike Diamond from Coin World. He wrote an article in Collectors' Clearinghouse Errors & Varieties. Still inconclusive on what caused this damage. Here is the article for you all to read. Enjoy! Sorry had to remove the article, didn't think about the copywrite issue. Sorry Mike. Mike can you give us the link so we can access the article?

Thanks for the update! I missed this one when it was posted originally, but it's some very interesting PMD and glad that Mike decided to investigate it thoroughly!

Unfortunately, Coin World seldom places my articles online in an open-access format. They like people to subscribe. However, it's perfectly acceptable to summarize my findings under the "fair use" doctrine. Personally, I don't care if my articles are posted in their entirely. I just want to warn people of possible legal ramifications (which I've never actually seen pursued against anyone).

Same thing happened to me Arby. Just edit your post and just post up a snippet of the important stuff.

Interesting, though more significant damage seems present on that dime i.e. east side rim appears flattened and also the surface appears discolored around the grooves almost like it was seared/heated possibly by friction?
