I'm leaning towards a contact mark from another coin PMD. It does look interesting but not being BU and the shape not matching other devices I don't think this is a dropped filling.

It isn't the same size as the L in LIBERTY or E PLURIBUS UNUM, with it being incuse I'm leaning towards damage.

I agree, post mint (strike) damage from another coin.

Guys, I understand you wanting to make this damage but why is the orientation correct, it would be reversed, if damage from another coin. Whether it be an "L" a partial "E" or a 7, it is still oriented correctly and I'm sure the OP knows this or they would not have taken the time to post.

If it is a dropped letter.
Isn't it just hard dried grease that fell out of a letter like the L-LIBERTY? If that's so. It wouldn't necessarily be the exact size of a letter.
When I first saw it I thought part of T from STATES.
But second thought the T wouldn't/couldn't drop onto the obverse side.

What is that to the left of the L? Are we going to need Mike on this one?

A dropped letter would not be incised. It would be pressed into the coin when the dies come together. In order to be incised, it would have to be part of the die.

While the shape isn't exactly right, based on the curvature of the metal there, if a coin were turned upside down and pressed into this coin (like so many coins we see), then that would make this the bottom of the C of CENTS along with the middle crossbar and some of the upright of the E. Of course, nothing says the opposing coin would need to be a cent. If it were a pair of dropped letters, then the coins should show some incuse markings between them where the grease glob was that was keeping them together.

Hmmmmmm. One of my original thought processes, was looking at the CE of CENT but was looking at it from the tops of CE not the bottom. Good point, tropicalbats.

I dove deep into this one too, went as far as to looking up the foreign coins made by the Philly mint, during the same time period....Feeling a little silly now.

The letter impressions (I see an L and a partial C) are confined to the highest point on the base of the bust. The vertical bar of the L fades out as it heads into an area of lower relief. Both observations indicate that these letter impressions are contact marks from other coins. Damage, in other words.

This is a high spot on the coin. Easy to get hit.

Makecents, Thanks for the link and straightening my thinking out. I was thinking that the dropped letter was all copper and not dirt and grease. Thinking all copper, it would blend in with the rest of the coin, and not fall out. Grease and dirt wouldn't adhere to the rest of the coin and fall out leaving the incused letter.

You are welcome, Cujohn. This coin threw me for a loop, fooled me.
