Quote: circulation cameo I like that term, first I've heard of it. And I like the look, always prefer it on older coins, glad to hear it has a name.

Here's a closer view of whatever is going on under the chin! I mean you can see scratches throughout, a fairly deep one right above this, but then it stops at the star?!? I'd think whatever did this couldn't have shut down, even go around the star? I always overthink things, not afraid to ask the stupid questions, which I know, hold your gasps, I know this is new info for everyone!!

And I just learned about circulation cameo for the first time as well!! I should probably change my profile to circulation ccb, since about 97% of my entire collection (which I'm not sure if it even meets definition of "collectione" has come from someone's pocket or purse, maybe a fanny pack

I could put an array of Mercury's, one barber, 4 or 5 Roosevelt's, Jefferson, Morgan, peace,Washington's, oh and my 2nd coin ever purchased my first Walking Liberty half I know I'm not supposed to put 2 coins on same thread, just so much easier, this gal came with a decent die crack going through STATE, tip of wing and up through America And no not a hair as displayed so nicely at bottom right of reverse

I love the smooth surface. But something under the chin might affect the grading. I have a question similar to yours resently. That is about my new 1860S Seated half dollar. There is strange damage on the coin. I will talk about it after dinner

Back to my question, I've seen that type of damage on other coins, you can obviously see it differs from your average scratch, dent, or ding!?!? Should I just call it damage and move on?

There is toning on the damaged part, which means this is an old damage. But it goes around by stars, I think somebody did it on purpose.
