The lot
- it depends on being a bargain, and best value for money paid. I have been using this approach for nearly 50 years, and a good collection has formed itself out of the accumulation.

With the scattergun approach, you eventually hit everything, but it does take a lifetime of being very selective when hunting for bargains, combined with patience.

Error coins, mainly U.S. but I have a few world ones too, as well as 2 error bills.

And more recently I have started collecting modern U.S. commemoratives. The eventual goal is to get an example of each one from every year that they made them. Be it a clad half, silver dollar, or gold, or some other odd ones that the mint has made.

Clearly, in my case, I'm just a "coin junkie" ... if something catches my eye, especially something not in my collection, I will spend some time learning about the history/length of run/varieties and then will often buy a few to add to my stash. So much fun !

Anything worth more than face value (most commonly, due to its copper or silver value) pulled out of circulation and some very casual roll hunting! I don't have a lot of disposable income so buying silver or gold is out of reach for me, but there are still plenty of copper cents, 35% silver War Nickels, etc. out there in circulation.

Also: extremely mutilated/corroded/damaged coins, including road rash, corroded zinc cents recovered from melted snowbanks, etc. Anything that's got a potentially interesting story to tell!

my preferred type of coin to collect is the coin that stimulates a necessarily positive emotional response upon sight and fits comfortably under one of these headings (price usually isn't a huge concern):

LWC
ASE
Type
Morgan
Bullion
Alchemy
Junk
Black Box

literally everything is fair game. I have at least a small bit of everything in your poll except for one item: I have no slabbed gold. I have some gold, but none of it is slabbed. my collection is not huge and my interests are limited. I really like the old st. gaudens designs, I just enjoy the art deco look of them. I also have an affinity for all the coins prior to dead presidents on coins.

Hmmm, my main focus is a set of civil war store cards issued from the town I live in. I've got the entire set now so I just look for upgrades and I don't find them very often but when I do that is my top priority.

I've got a few circulated sets going, IHCs, SLQs, walkers and Three Cent pieces and a nicer set of Two Cent Pieces.
