I'll say AU-55.

Looks like AU 55 maybe an MS 62. I would be concerned with the angle of photography as well. Not seeing any overly obvious cleaning, but the angle and lighting could easily be hiding something.

Just some historical pricing context....I bought a raw 1948 MS63/64 dollar from Charles Moore in 1985 for $1,500. Which was a lot of money for me back then. The last two TCNC auctions for an EF45 1948 have averaged $2,000.....

@tripoli - that is an interesting point about the 1948 silver dollar as an investment. I often wonder about the virtues of numismatics as an investment category in general; for the most part, I do this for the fun. Nevertheless, there are questions to be asked here. Some coins, like the 1948, were rare from the outset but they were minted at a time when people were aware of the fact that something might have collector potential down the road. As a result, for a rare coin, they're weirdly common. There's no difficulty finding 1948s in auctions, on ebay (currently >20 on sale there) or in actual stores. My take is that if you want to make money on coins, you need to keep your eyes open for the unnoticed and the under-appreciated.

I'm just looking through the 1948s on ebay. The highest asking price is $88,000 (MS-66, raymac is the seller) and the lowest is $1,900 (EF40, cleaned! from northern giant). PCGS has graded no less than 867 of them and there area almost 100 at MS-64 or higher.

As silver said, any coin show that you go to will have 10-20 of them for sale and ebay about the same. That date had been ID'd as something that was really special, so people hung on to them. Even going back 50 years in Charlton, I thought that they were overpriced compared to others. My 1975 Charlton has an UNC at $600, with the '45 at $200.... over 50 years ago.

Yeah, every dealer has a 1948 in stock, but try finding a high grade 1945 , 46 or 1938 dollar in their inventory.

1948 Dollar shown , AU50 .
The 1948 Dollar is in my opinion nothing
but an overrated " money coin" .
If you have the money easy to find !
Grades normally encountered EF 40 to MS60
usually cleaned at one time .
MS63 are scarce and MS64 or better , very elusive .
As stated above , many other dates are extremely
difficult to acquire in Choice Grades .

Same with the US 1909-S VDB. Hundreds listed on ebay, but that doesn't detract from the plain fact that they're both the lowest mintage coins in their series. Calling them overrated and "money coin" sounds disparaging. To me, "overrated" is merely relative to other coins that are underrated, like the 1947ML or the 1946, but astute collectors know that. There's no reason the 1947ML shouldn't be valued on a par with the 1948, since the mintage is only 2355 more than the 1948, the second lowest, and both were minted in 1948, but nothing will change the fact that collectors value the last digit stamped on the coin 2-3x more.

I'd say AU53 on this one. It doesn't exhibit a lot of wear but it's pretty beat up. I think it's the "notched 4" RPD reverse, which doesn't mean anything in terms of value.
