Quote: Besides, if you ever go to sell the set is your buyer necessarily going to believe you when you say THAT coin used to be in THIS broken slab? If it was accompanied by a good photo of the coin inside of the slab, I'd believe it. Coins are like fingerprints and snowflakes. :)

I would love to have everything in the album and might break open the slab. Undecided... eventhough I'm not collecting to make money down the road, I would like to be able to fall back on it if I'm in a terrible financial situation. It'll definitely be my last solution but still...

I will keep the label in the back of whatever album to coin belongs to.

I got excited recently when I found a 1916 in a drawer. Unfortunately, there was no "D" mint mark.

I bought my 16D from a dealer whom I had been buying from for the past 25 (or so) years. I bought it raw as an XF, sent it in to PCGS and it came back XF-40. I don't hesitate to buy raw coins from this dealer because I know he's fair and honest.

The pope is honest too but you dont see me buying non certified 1916ds from him. Id still worry that the raw coin was sold to the dealer as a fake and that the dealer no matter how honest could possibly have missed the diagnostics and sold me a fake coin unknowlingly. So id say certified all the way, but to each his own I guess. Those chinese make excellent fakes. -XoG

Here is my humble AG-3 16-d, still in the NGC slab. Also seen in my other thread. Shatsi, are you still looking for a 16-d? There is a really strong ANACS AG-3 up for sale here for $700: http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4570857#I don't know the seller, but this is probably the strongest AG-3 I've seen in an ANACS slab, especially the reverse. It looks crusty and original too. The reverse lettering appears to be practically complete. I would have considered it if I hadn't already purchased my other one.

Hey, to all those knocking your AG-3's - Don't! This coin gets crazy expensive after VG, and forget about MS!!

johnny54321, thank you. I'm still looking for one. And I agree the coin in the link you provided is strong for the grade and reasonable pricing but I don't like the look of the surface, it doesn't tickle my taste buds:)

No photos of my 16D's but have many of them. Of course I got them way, way back when I was a kid. They cost me $1.50 each and back then a loaf of bread was a Nickeel so a $1.50 was a fortune. I have NO plastic slabs although I have in the past purchased coins in slabs. I just can not see coins in plastic slabs. Sorry for that you slab people but I'd rather have no holes in my Albums with a piece of paper saying I do have that coin or this coin but not here, but in a piece of plastic somewhere. When I open an Album, I don't like to see through a slot.

Found one in change when I was a teenager. It was AG. I kept it for a while & sold it for $35 - 30 years ago !

This coin in ANY grade is a fantastic investment however, the prospective buyer should take warning that it is one of the most heavily counterfeited coins in numismatics. One should never purchase this coin raw unless you know the traits of a genuine specimen. Stick with PCGS,NGC,or ANACS. That's just my Two Cents worth. BTW, mine is a PCGS AG03.
