It hasn't been graded. (I have never submitted any coins to be graded/slabbed. I guess I prefer the coins in books with other dates/mintmarks versus in a slab. Personal preference, I guess.)

Moe - I feel the same way. I guess we could always break the slab and put the coin in the album while still keeping the slab as proof, but that just seems wrong somehow. Besides, if you ever go to sell the set is your buyer necessarily going to believe you when you say THAT coin used to be in THIS broken slab?

On the subject of breaking your coin out of the plastic prison it was in when you bought it - that's exactly what I did with my 1916D - it's in the album with the others in my set - it's the only one I needed to complete the set, and, if it was still in the slab, I'd still have that empty hole. I did keep the insert from the slab, but I collect coins for my own pleasure, not for what they're worth down the road - I've never sold a coin - too busy having fun collecting, so I don't concern myself with wondering what a buyer might think.

I have also broken coins out of slabs. Yes, I keep the tag (why? I don't know! I sure wouldn't trust a tag without a slab, myself! Would you?)

It's just a personal preference. I like the looks of a filled/filling a book versus a pile of slabs. (No offense to the slabbers. Believe me, I envy you! You usually have MUCH better coins than mine.) It's just not my way.

HOWEVER!

There's room for all of us here!

If it was accompanied by a good photo of the coin inside of the slab, I'd believe it. Coins are like fingerprints and snowflakes. :)

I would love to have everything in the album and might break open the slab. Undecided... eventhough I'm not collecting to make money down the road, I would like to be able to fall back on it if I'm in a terrible financial situation. It'll definitely be my last solution but still...

I agree. If I ever buy a slabbed coin (which is very likely given today's climate) I will take good photos of it in and out of the slab. I will keep the label in the back of whatever album to coin belongs to.
Rest in Peace

I got excited recently when I found a 1916 in a drawer. Unfortunately, there was no "D" mint mark.

I bought my 16D from a dealer whom I had been buying from for the past 25 (or so) years. I bought it raw as an XF, sent it in to PCGS and it came back XF-40. I don't hesitate to buy raw coins from this dealer because I know he's fair and honest.

The pope is honest too but you dont see me buying non certified 1916ds from him. Id still worry that the raw coin was sold to the dealer as a fake and that the dealer no matter how honest could possibly have missed the diagnostics and sold me a fake coin unknowlingly. So id say certified all the way, but to each his own I guess. Those chinese make excellent fakes.
