This is an interesting topic. "Buffalo nickels..what got me started in coins..a beautiful coin." I totally agree with this statement. Although Buffalo nickels lose their date early, they retain a substantial amount of detail in G-4 on both obverse and reverse. Much more than just an outline, like most G-4 coins. Also, the incuse indian gold quarter and half eagles retain a lot of detail in low grades. I'm not sure what a G-4 would look like, but it is honestly difficult to tell the difference between XF and mintstate based purely on the details.

I love the reverse with the Eagle in flight. Wish they would bring it back. Like for the 2010 cent maybe. As for G4 coins, I think that would have to be the Walkers and Mercs.

I'm partial to old copper specifically, the Draped Bust Large Cent :-)

I believe any coin can look good in G4, as long as it isn't damaged, even Large Cents.

i hate to change the question now, but I think alot of coins look alot better with some wear than they do in uncirculated condition. I think a little circulation brings out the contrast of the fields and the details. I would take an nice $6-7 xf walking liberty over a $18 unc anyday.

I also going to say copper coins. I like the look of IHC when they are worn.

A real newbie here, but I have to go with the capped(affordable)/draped bust design. Just broke down and made my first coin purchase- an 1825 Half in G4-6. I am a little partial to OLD silver, but as runner ups I give the Walker, Merc, Morgan, ....all the others credit too.

Small silver coins tend to look best in G4, in my opinion. That obviously would include the Mercs. To me, any silver will look good. Copper, though, is another story. An IHC in G4 looks like he's wearing a blindfold as the whole image becomes distorted from wear!

When you say you can hardly ever afford high end coins and are looking toward G4 grade coins, how much money are we talking about? Some G4 can cost hundreds of dollars, but a 1910 P Lincoln Cent is only 75 cents and there are several Seated Liberty dimes that will run about $15.

I agree some are very expensive. I would say the most beautiful G4 coin is my 1895 o Barber dime :)

I love the mercuries, but not in G4. I would say the Walkers have a good luck even in G4 though.
