Thanks for the info R2bR2c...maybe you can clear up the other info I was given. I was told CCCS are dealers themselvess (bringing into question their impartiality) where ICCS only grades, not deals in coins.
I have no preference one way or the other btw, just trying to determine who gets my coins. I am after honest and repectable judgement.

Yes, Louis is also a dealer who has a table at most shows. He used to run a large auction as well, but he and his partner parted ways (last I heard) and his old partner now has rights to it. But he ceetifies many more coins than he ever sells at coin shows.

I have a little story about ICCS, it was told by a well known numismatist at one of are coin meetings. He said he sent a high end coin to ICCS to get slabbed, first time received it was not the grade he was sure it was, so once more to ICCS, same outcome, again sent out for the third time, yep Walsh got the grade he was capable of grading... j

I have a 1 cent collection and all of the high end coins are certified.I would say 50% ICCS 40% CCCS and 10% PCGS.My experience is that CCCS is more conservative than ICCS.I often got better grades from ICCS.That said,I trust CCCS to be the most accurate. Also by far the best slab. For the coins you want to keep and not sell CCCS is the way to go. In regards to being a dealer and auctioneer, just ask yourself this question:If Louis over grades his own coins how long will he remain in business?

CCCS grading,as with every other TPG service has taken a while to stabilize. The same happened with ICCS/NGC/PCGS in 1986 onward-some call it "Grading-creep"- I call it stabilization in a new process. CCCS, PCGS, NGC, ANACS all grade copper the same thus you can get a copper coin in an MS-65BN holder while ICCS sticks to an outmoded grading model-unless you want to assume the rest of the world is wrong except ICCS. That "outmoded" model thinking enters into their business model, doesn't reflect the "International" part of their name, they have no website, no holder security, work narrow hours such that people from other countries trying to contact them find it very expensive and inconvenient to do so really works against them while other TPG services can be contacted via the web. Finally, TPG services in the U.S. like PCGS have been "tested" in Court via legal cases and proven to be right and their grades are not an "opinion" but guaranteed vs that stated in both CCCS and ICCS. I suggest when either Canadian service stops trying to sidestep their legal responsibility as "experts" they are assumed to be by using the term "opinion", their credibility will improve. As most collectors don't seem to get this I'd suggest asking some questions of legal representatives for clarification. I used to use ICCS and CCCS- I now use PCGS and NGC as both are considered defacto standards worldwide.

Quote: "their grades are not an "opinion" but guaranteed " jerry you have ben misled ALL grades are an opinion no matter who provides it. The PCGS guarantee only guarantees that their opinion will not change over time, that means no grade creep like we see with ICCS, bu it's still just an opinion.

I agree DBM and that's the way it's always been. BTW, the initial posts are all from 6 years ago, except Jerry's. I love it when "grade creep" is mentioned, as if it never happened in the last 6 years.

Wow... is there an echo in here? Or am I seeing three versions of Bill posting in this thread over six years?

My only comment about CCCS would be the turn around time. It's often ridiculously long and one of the reasons why I do not send coins there. As far as being consistently more conservative that ICCS, I do not agree. I have come across cross grades from CCCS to ICCS where ICCS assigned a lower grade.

TPG can "guarantee" all they like....they will never guarantee a "value"......A collector could not have that expectation (risk) for the amount that the coin certification service costs. Grade shopping gets really expensive, but I have a stunning MS 65 dollar, which started out ICCS 64, went to California and returned a diminished PCGS 63 and returned to it's full lustrous condition as an ICCS MS65 where it belongs.......the Cat values for this range are $300 for a MS63 to $5,000 in MS65. Having said that, I do not have any personal experience with CCCS coins. My experience with hockey cards, is always go with the big boys. It's tough for someone to break into any industry, 30 years after it's begun.

Yes, SPP ... I have been removed from this site a number of times for rude comments about some authors and TPG's. I've been a good boy since Okiecoiner started.

I didn't miss anything as per "opinion" as it's a legal dodge by both companies (ICCS and CCCS). The only way to clarify is to test it in a court of law and neither of the services in Canada have been sued.
Further, I'd rather have a legal guarantee of their "opinion" by say PCGS than nothing at all which is what you get by ICCS and CCCS. It's not about coins-it's about law and neither is willing to stand by their product from a legal standpoint. An opinion that isn't defensible is no opinion at all.
