Seems like a solid EF to me.

Appreciate the feedback, all. I'm leaning towards XF45. If I'm successful in acquiring it, I'll let you know.

1892 is on its way. Here's my digitally assembled collection so far. Pictures aren't perfect, but good enough to represent what I've assembled so far.

EF 40. Obverse surfaces look choppy. I wouldn't by a raw coin, or a slabbed one for that matter, sight unseen without return privileges. I have returned several TPG graded coins with misleading photos. I have a straight graded PCGS VF35 1859-S Seated dime which, although a key to the series, is double ugly. I hate it so much I bought a different PCGS VF35 on the basis of a major dealer's picture. The coin I received was nothing like the photo. It was dipped and shiny, unlike any VF coin should be, so I sent it back, keeping the ugly one I hoped to replace. Many honorable numismatists take pains to call out less than perfect features of the coins they are selling. But there are some wild west gunslingers out there and we all must be careful.

This finally arrived. The obverse has some muted cartwheel toning remaining. The reverse has nice full cartwheel toning in line with what one might expect for a low AU reverse. I'm still in the net XF45 camp. I'm happy with it for the price paid.

adam. Very nice CC, but the reverse image of this coin looks like it's been cleaned. It's in your hands, tell us about it?

C4M, in hand under lighting with magnification from 5 to 20x, I see no evidence of mechanical cleaning, hairlines etc. Nor do I see evidence of chemical cleaning, removal of old toning etc. there is a little gunk of the type that looks like it would come off with acetone, but I have no plans to do that.
To me it looks like this was stored somewhere for a long time that protected the reverse while leaving the obverse exposed to both physical abue (more nicks, dings etc) in addition to picking up more toning due to greater exposure to environmental conditions.
As said, I'm happy with it for a raw coin. As a general practice, I don't buy slabbed coins, nor do I send coins for slabbing. I intend to buy the remaining CCs raw as well.
Thanks for the feedback, I always appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts here on the CCF.

revising to XF45. I dont think it can make AU. I agree with your assessment that the coin most likely was stored obv up protecting the reverse from any enviomental conditions.
