I always refer to the Whitman as a "Generic" type coin album as it just scratches the surface of a complete collection of type coins. But to fill the Whitman is much less expensive because of it's incompletness.

To be honest, the majority of the coins that I would include in my personal type set are in the Whitman album. I wish it had a few more spots or varieties, but that's honestly about it. A spot for Shield nickels would be nice, and a few other random coins like the 3 cent nickel, 2 cent piece, etc.

The Whitman is a 20th century type set. Dansco is 19th/20th. Those 19th century type coins can be costly. The Whitman is a good choice. I wish Dansco had this option. If this will be your only Whitman album, that might bug you. Otherwise, go for it.

Yeah, this is, at least for now, the route I will probably go. As interesting of a project as it would be to do a 7070, I have no desire to spend that much on earlier coins in the series. If I could look around and search, and find good deals on coins, that would obviously be more ideal. However, there isn't really necessarily a guarantee that I'm going to find the more expensive coins in the series for the prices I can afford. So, it's probably better to stay away for now. I have to say, I think Whitman albums do have some advantages over Dansco. For example, if you are looking to do the National park quarter series, they include all P&D minted coins, and then an S-mint mark for proofs. That said, they don't seem to differentiate between "silver proofs" and clad proofs. I like this. Some might not. I've also noticed this with several other series that they do. Kennedy halves, Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, etc. However... Not really a fan of how they break up albums at random spots, needing to buy a second album.

Yes, yes I do. I have many sets I'm working on, and my wallet disagrees with this.

I felt the same way when I bought the 7070 in 1993. "What am I doing? Some of these holes are really expensive!" I knew then it was a long term project and it took almost 30 years to complete it. I would not change a thing.

Perhaps. Still, to be honest, I'm hesitant about spending so much on single coins that aren't part of my regular sets.
I could also, of course, go the 2x2 route. I hate dealing with 2x2's, though. Whitman also has some "vintage" type albums out there that are type sets, but separated by small and large coin denominations. Interesting finds. That "small coin" album is pretty cool.

Alright, just for giggles... I ordered three Whitman albums. V nickels, Type set, and then the Roosevelt dimes from 1946-2022. The interesting thing that I mentioned previously with Whitman albums, that unlike Dansco, they only have one spot for S mint coins and do not differentiate between silver proof or clad proof. I honestly like this, as it gives someone the option to collect with proofs without having to worry about expensive silver proofs.

We will see. I know I'll be keeping the V nickel album. However, the other two, we shall see.

You don't mess around Quote: they only have one spot for S mint coins and do not differentiate between silver proof or clad proof. I wonder what collectors do that want both the clad and silver proofs....buy a Dansco?
