My Mom has promised me my Dad's collection. We scanned piles of pennies as a family growing up, scanning for any coins that could fill holes in our Lincoln Cent album. And then when I visited my Mom last summer (my Dad, unfortunately passed away three years ago), we got talking about my coin collecting hobby. She said I could have my Dad's collection since no one else in the family really cared about it. (I still haven't got it, but I also don't let her forget her promise!) I know he collected Lincoln cents (that's all we did as kids). And as far as I knew, that's all he collected. After all, he had to raise all four of us needy kids! My Mom then disappeared and came back with a few brown bags and a small box. She showed me a lot of 1976 Bicentennial Quarters, a million wheat pennies and a few common date Morgans and Peace dollars. And, then she pulled out a slabbed PCGS XF-45 1922 no D Lincoln Cent. Attached was the sales slip for $2300. I was flabbergasted! The coin was fantastic! I think I drooled! And that's all she showed me. Who knows what else is there? So, I'm waiting for the word from my Mama to ask me to come get my Dad's collection. I really have no idea what else is there. (I don't want be pushy...) But just imagine! Someone with my coin collecting genes... If I were him, with all the kids gone, what would I buy for my collection? Hmmmmmmm...

Moe145: That's really amazing to discover! It sounds like your dad was able to enjoy some high dollar collecting once the kids were raised and moved out It will be very interesting to find out what all is in the collection!

I posted this earlier today over in the Main Coin forum in soldier4Christ's thread called "Anyone else like me" and wheatguy recommend that I post it over here in Classic Coins. I remembered that I'd started a thread a while back when I was first starting this 7070, so I figured I'd just dig it up and post in here. Hopefully anyone interested in seeing what I've been working on will find it It's a pretty well circulated 7070 Type Set album made up primarily of coins from family collections that my wife and I have inherited as well as our own coins that we have collected. I've been labeling the reverse of each page under the coins as to where they came from so we'll remember in the future and also whoever inherits them from us will know the lineage. Anyway, here's the first page of the album: if you want to see the rest, you can check them out here: http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/...0Type%20Set/Thanks for looking!

wheatguy: LOL! Thanks for posting them all I didn't know if people would want to wait for all of the pics to load, but I guess they have no choice now! I'll get other sets scanned/photographed eventually, but that will take longer. So far, the only ones that are very far along are Lincoln Cents (a good start), Jefferson nickles (getting close), Mercury dimes (complete except for 16d), Roosevelt dimes (still need some silver), and Washington quarters (still need a good bit of silver). I need to make a major Dansco purchase in early January and once I do that and get them all transferred in and looking nice, I'll try to get some scans/pics posted. We're working on lots more than that too...it'll be nice to get everything sorted out finally and organized properly once the Dansco albums are all here. I think it will look nice on the shelf too

Oops, should I edit my post? Wow that seems like a really fun adventure. It'll look really nice when they all come near completion. Looks like it'll take up a lot of time and won't only have numismatic and bullion value, but also sentimental.

That is awesome bwbollom! And that you are sharing the joy with your family is great! Congratulations on getting your wife involved. I've been working on my wife for a while, but she detests it somewhat due to how obsessed I am....LOL! Anyways, you are making lots of great memories with your family, so enjoy it and hold on to it. :-)

wheatguy: Nah, I don't mind...I almost did it that way. They can just wait for it to load :)
I definitely recommend working on the set. The only negative to me is that it really won't have a tremendous numismatic value as far as "high grade" coins go, but that's not what it's all about to me. It's fun, the album itself cost about $15 (found a near perfect used one), the coins for the most part are coming from family collections, and now I'm just adding what I see that I like. Good times!

Yeah definitely, in my opinion a well matched circulated set can be just as pleasing as one high grade, and it really is fun, as whenever you go to a show or shop you're always looking for the next coin. Great that your family is part of it to, that adds even more value to the set.

That's a great story! Coins like that may not be worth a lot of money, but sentimentally, they're priceless! You can always look at those coins and remember their history in your family and what they mean to you. It's also great to get others involved in the hobby, even in a small way.

Terror Of Zanarkand: Thanks! That's exactly what I want this album to be about. I can have any number of other "investments" but this album is all about family

This thread makes me smile.
I lost my father in Feb., and stumbled upon his small collection. Searching through it these past months has been very cathartic...and it's also managed to "re-pique" my interest in the hobby.
He left behind 8 grandchildren. The 3 oldest are my grown sons.
With what he left behind in his collection, plus what I've managed to find via roll-searching...I've managed to fill 8 Whitman albums with some very nice '75 thru 2009 Lincolns. Along with 8 mostly-full '41 thru '74's.
All are currently wrapped, and under the Christmas tree.
Thanks so much for sharing your story.

scotty11: That's a really great story! I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but glad that you were able to reconnect through your father's hobby! I hope the grandchildren appreciate the gifts! As you probably read, my wife and I have been doing the same with her grandfather's Lincoln Cent collection. His 5 grandchildren are getting Dansco albums as complete as we could get them...30s - 90s...from his coins (some of the newer dates added by their grandmother after he passed away). There are some missing dates scattered throughout...gives them something to do to make it their own if they decide to collect more or they can just leave it as "these are from grandpa's collection." Here's the pre-wrapped stack (top one is ours): Merry Christmas!
