Quote: Scotty, while I understand what you're saying, most collectors hold some things close to their vests. wholeheartedly! I guess it's what prompted my first response here. I've seen multiple threads and responses here where members will admit to, (and show photos of...) owning coins worth much more than any 1909-S VDB. It's one of the very reasons my main focal point is the Lincoln Cent. It's due to its "collectability" for lack of a better word. There are many, many more coins that are more rare than the 09-s vdb....but...when those 3 initials are typed...along with "1909-S"... all kinds of heck is unleashed... it facinates me somewhat...

Quote: I'm afraid that this will always be an empty hole in my albums for me. eaglefoot...stop thinking about "me"...and start thinking towards the future! I'll be 48 in September. 37 years ago I was lucky enough to watch my grandfather give my father this vdb-s. My grandfather "dropped" it in the front yard of his home, and then "allowed" my father to "find" it with his brand-spanking-new metal detector! The story behind the coin is worth so much more than the coin itself. I now have grown sons...and I now have coins that they need to fill holes in their own albums.

This coins reminds me the German 5 Mark 'Centenary Nurnberg Museum'. It is very expensive because it has some renown but there are more than enough for those that are willing to pay the price.

More than likely the only one I'll ever get is one of those copy coins. I believe the value of the 09-S vdb should be less than half of what it is. There is just to much hype rolling with it and there are much scarcer coins with lower mintages that get no recognition. So many people buy one than turn around and sell it just for the sake of saying they had owned one.

I don't have one yet, but I think I will some day. It's a coin thats always been in high demand as the key date to a series that has always been highly collectible - buy one now for a decent price and it will likely go up in value. If you tire of it, you can always sell it and buy something that interests you more.

in my grandfathers collection I inherited he had a 1955/55 that he had gotten when he owned a service station. He even remembered how he had gotten it, it was in a pack of cigarettes that was in the vending machines because cigarettes cost 24¢ a pack and the vending machine only took quarters so the cigarette companies would put Lincoln Cents in the packs so they would only pay 24¢ a pack and this was one of those Lincoln cents. The guy cut it out and left it on the counter and my grandfather has always been a hoarder and coin collector so a free cent was something he would never pass up no matter where it was. This one happened to be the 1955/55 that I found and asked him about

Kind of bragging a bit but I presently have 10 completed sets of Lincoln Cents. They all do contain all coins necessary to fill my Whitman Classic Albums. All are in Zip Lock plastic bags and in safe deposit vaults. Of course this has been an accumulation of over 60 years. I've always noticed that any coin show I go to there is an abundance of 1909S VDB cents and usually all in slabs. I've found over a period of time that it is much less common to find the 1916D Mercury dime at a coin show. One dealer at the last coin show I was at, last Sunday, had several 09S VDB's and only 1 16D Mercury dime. And he usually has 3 tables of coins. Usually he has a stack of 1921 and 1921D Mercury dimes too. It's the 1922 Plain that is becoming really difficult to even see at a coin show.

10! I've been saving up just to get one! Which, hopefully, I will be ready for when the F.U.N. show comes in January!

just carl: I know you've been collecting for a long time. Did you find any of the 09 S VBBs in circulation?

I've never owned an 09-S VDB. I just haven't brought myself to coughing up the loot for one. The funny thing is, I've got a 22 No D Die #2, but not an 09-S VDB.
