hmm...it seems you could order boxes of them kind of like you do with everything else? or perhaps it's just too late and everyone's snatched up all the Peace dollars, etc.

If your bank is cooperative, they can order you boxes of dollars, but they can't specify what kind other than specific Presidential dollars in a two or three week window just after release. That means they are going to get random small dollars, i.e., mixed Susies, Sacs and Presidents. They can't in my understanding order "large dollars" which would be most likely all clad Ikes anyway. When a bank winds up with these, they are because a customer has brought them in.

I have searched four 1000-count bags of Ikes this year. There were two silver Ikes in all that number. I found no Walkers or Peace dollars. I found one common nickel, but that was it for variety. Ths same bag actually had 1008 Ikes in it, so I got a $8.05 bonus.

I have actually been able to order bags of Ike's from a local bofa. Thinking about doing it again soon. Have been through $1.5K and found only 1 40% silver Ike, though have found a few proof's. I'm sure if I did enough I would eventually find a Morgan or Peace dollar or two but in general would expect the occurrence to be exceedingly uncommon. Ike's were first minted in the 70's after silver was already removed from general coinage, so there were no Ike's minted with silver for general circulation. The silver Ike's that were minted were intended for collectors. Kennedy half dollars on the other hand were minted 64-70 with silver and those blend in with the clad Kennedy's so they are easily missed by some people. Have had much better silver find success searching half dollars

Agree. Waste of time to search Ikes for silver. I collect Ikes because they are cool, not because they are silver.

Actually they probably can order the large size dollars and get them if the local Fed branch has them on hand. The problem is the form the banks use to order coins and currency from the Fed does not have a space on the form for them. (They have a line for cents, for nickels, dimes etc. There is a line for the small size dollars but not the large ones. I knew a bank though that was able to get them simply by writing in their own line for the large size dollars. Most banks would not think to try doing that but if you could get the vault teller at you bank to try it you might be able to get Ikes that way. No promises. You have to figure though that the banks kep sending them back to the Fed, and the Fed doesn't melt them down so they have to be somewhere. They don't leave the Fed again most likely simply because they are never ordered. If you could get the bank to actually write in the request and order them it might work.

yeah, to answer some of your questions, I'm not actually looking for silver ikes per se, but rather peace dollars/morgan dollars and, of course, 40% ikes for good measure. i just like the hunt. I mean, sure I could buy the Peace dollars, but it's so much more gratifying when you fish it out.

The silver ones show up now and then. I pulled ten from a teller once. She had $40 in Ikes that day. That was a strange day, I also had a different teller hand me an 1826 dollar. It was drilled but I didn't care! Maine_Jim

I have gotten only one silver Ike from circulation, and that was a scratched up proof.
