Also, used to be Penny wise and Dollar foolish but so many complain we really have cents, not pennies.
For some reason I keep thinking of where I heard "Shave and a Haircut, 2 bits"
SAP: those are really interesting. Where did you find that info?

Don't know about famous, but from the Simpsons:

Mr Burns: I have won every coin, yet I feel strangely empty inside. Oh, there's another coin. That should do it.

One of my favourites:

Don't spoil the ship (or sheep) for a ha'porth of tar.

Ha'porth is a halfpenny worth. The usual reference is to a ship that may sink because of penny-pinching. The more unusual reference to the sheep is that cuts and sores on sheep were treated with a dollop of tar to prevent infection, to lose one is another example of penny-pinching.

Cockney rhyming slang:

"I'm off for a thrupenny bit" (threepenny).
Refering to the act of going to the toilet. I'll leave it to you to work it out.

Trailers for sale or rent
Rooms to let...fifty cents

No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes

Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room

I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road.
