jondob, There are few things to look for in the 1965 P/L sets.

1) Dollar coin L Bead or Sm Bead, Pointed 5 or Blunt 5
2) 5 cent L Jewel Sm Jewel Extra Claw on beaver back foot
3) 1 cent Sm Bead Pointed 5 Sm Bead Blunt 5 Large Bead Blunt 5
4) Cameo, Heavy Cameo finish

The Small Bead Pointed + Blunt 5 Dollars are the common ones all the rest carry a little better premium depending on which one it is.
I have never seen a 1 cent pointed 5 yet but I have herd rumors of them I think that set would be worth a fair bit and the set with a 5 cent with a large jewel would be the one worth the most.
There may be more thats all the ones I know of.

jodob, you are looking at the price of circulation coinage when you see MS65 being worth XXX . These sets contain PL (Proof Like , meaning they were made for collectors) coins which are worth much less. Assuming your 1965 dollar is PL65 and graded by a company, it's worth ~35-40 dollars fair market value. Add extra for cameo and extra again for PL66 and more yet for PL67. I have a PL66 cameo 1967 in the for sale section at a reasonable 55 dollars I got from someone's collection I bought. If it were an MS66 cameo you can bet it would be worth ten times that at least.

These sets have some varieties, but without any valuable ones popping up they are worth bullion value. 1.1 ounces of silver.

Ugly, thank you for your response and everyone else's.

So What should I be expecting to get for each set then?

Ok, thank you everyone! I was hoping I'd have some worth a few hundred dollars. There sure is a lot to look for on a coin.

I hope this is close to topic, any idea what a mint set like this for 1964 that has the "dollar missing the dot" is worth? Would it be better to break up the set and part it out or sell as a whole. thanks

In the PL it's not worth a premium, it's a just a common variety. Like a 65 blunt five or pointed five, makes no difference. You might get a small premium for the set 5-15 dollars if you advertise it as specifically no dot.

Forgive my lack of knowledge but if the BV today for the set is about $48 are you saying the set is worth about $58 (just to stay in the middle of your estimate)?

Yes I'm saying someone looking for exactly that variety might add ~5-15 dollars to the BV. It's not as common as the normal set, but it does not qualify as scare, just variety.

If you check ebay item number 110662825896 you'll find that one of the larger coin dealers in Canada will sell you that set today for 51.50. Colonial Acres is expensive imo.

Your mileage may vary.

The large beads blunt 5 (Type 3) 1-cent in the 1965 PL set does carry a minor premium. Typically, that coin sells raw or uncertified between $30 and $50. That variety is relatively scarce, but the demand for that variety is low however.

Thanks Ugly (it seems hard to type that) very clear. I'm not a silver collector yet I have about $6 face just hanging around, so I want to set it free and convert it to copper Canadian large cents...

Do any of you Canadian folks have a closeup photo comparing the 1965 one cent with large beads pointed five to the 1965 one cent with small beads and blunt five?

If so, please send me a URL of this side-by-side comparison picture.

Thanks for your help.

You should check for a cent with the pointed 5. If you find one, SPP and I will battle it out gladiator style for the chance to buy it from you. I've yet to physically see credible evidence they even exist, despite a few being in the pop report.

Search the archives. I've scanned and hosted pictures of the fives before, and others here have done so as well with the fives and the beads.
