Well...it's a shame when collectors join this forum only to get "bad news", even if helpful advice. A trusted TPG should make the final call on authenticity. I hope they'll have good news for you. TPGs may be accurate on authentication but they're not ominpresent. Forums like CCF are invaluable to share knowledge, educate ourselves, and to develop a critical eye towards coins. We can't take any coin at face value these days.

That is why I am hesitant to call it a fake as this is not my area of specialty. But I looked through Breen and some auction records and do not find this die variety.

My suggestion to you would be to go to a big coin show and take it to a TPG there. I know we have one coming to town in a few weeks and PCGS is always there. They give verbal opinions and have been very helpful to me. The one lady that did mine said she was 100% certain my three legged buffalo was authentic and she would submit it for me. I just wanted to make sure it was real since I put it into a folder. Still extremely helpful.

I did a little more legwork, and looked up the die pairs for the 1793 chain cent. There are just 4 die pairs (S-1 to S-4), where the date postion/styles are covered by my group of pics on page 1. Here's an updated pic of the 4 die pairs date positions:

Well, that pretty much solidifies it as fake, unless there is some weird exception. That is really too bad . Do you remember where you got it Brickellcat? Any chance you could return it?

Tom Reynolds could tell you instantly without even sending it to a TPG. Send him these pics and weight of the coin.

Vermon... I took your advice and emailed the photos to Tom Reynolds. P.S. The weight is 13.38 grams.

Brickellcat, Good move. He is IMO, the premier expert on early copper. If anyone will know, he will. You may not get an answer till early this week as he is at a show right now. Please post his findings here :-) It's certain aspects of the coins diagnostics which concern us.

Well Tom replied with the bad news that it's a fake. This coin is part of my Father's collection and he has no memory of where he got it. I don't think I'll tell him what I found out. Thanks for all the replies and research.

Wow, I'm amazed he replied that quickly. Hey, at least you know now and you didn't pay a TPG fee.
