Normally in my experiences, they are waay overpriced. They think just becuase its from a different country its worth a ton. [
But if youre good at bargaining you might come out alive:)

Never discount the possibility. Normally useless - they usually want to much for the offal they're selling - but you don't find diamonds unless they're surrounded by dirt, either.

My first "coin store" when I was a kid was really just a local pawn shop. They had an area sectioned off for jewelry, precious metals, and my favorite...COINS! I bought a lot of my Mercury dime set from them in the mid 80s for 7x face! It was one of my favorite stops when my parents would take me into town to go grocery shopping and run errands :)

Some are good, some are not so good. A couple of months ago, though, we were able to find Silver Eagles for slightly less than spot, even with tax included. As someone mentioned, they don't always keep up with changes in the silver spot price. They have plenty of other stuff that is way overpriced though too like common date circulated Kennedy halves that had asking prices of $3/each.

I've talked to two pawnshops and both run the EXACT same deal : You buy EVERYTHING They have regardless of what it is. Most of the shops around here ONLY care about bullion and/or jewelry, coins are very second-tier for them. One dealer brought out a bag he wanted to show me , 9 bullion coins (I think one was a 2010ASE) then one was a BU morgan. He also notified me he had 100 or so merc dimes in the back too.

As already noted it's all just a take a chance with pawn shops. Usually if they haven't had experience with coins, you can get some great deals. Once they find out about prices, they get a little nutty thinking every coin is worth a fortune.

I have a buddy that sprays the biggest pawn shop in my area for bugs (he is an exterminator) and any time I want something from the pawn shop I will have him call and tell them he is sending me up there for something and they always sell me stuff at their cost because of him. They have given us stuff before for nothing because he cuts them a deal because they have to be sprayed quite often because allot of the stuff that people bring in have bugs in the stuff. I have never bought any coins or anything from them but I have gotten quite allot of good deals on gold necklaces and even a $1000.00 peavey amp I paid 150.00 for, for my son. He can hook it to his pc and record him playing and he can also play rhythm and record it in the amp and then it will play the rhythm back while he can then play lead. It is about the coolest amp I had ever seen. He had a real small amp before this one but it messed up on him so I bought him this thing to replace it, it actually cost less than the portable amp he had at first

I got a 70/70 Dansco for $17 at a pawn shop. It looked brand new.

I have visited a few pawn shops in the past and every single one of them was quite proud of their coins, that is they were way overpriced. Needless to say, I have never bought a coin from a pawn shop.

I've only been to one pawn shop a few months ago. Walked out with a pair of Morgans for $40 when melt was at $25. I agree with just carl, if they haven't had much experience you might get a good deal. This same shop mentioned he had some slabbed coins in the back. Maybe I should have taken him up on it.

Lol, it greatly depends on the pawnbroker. Each guy is unique. I've had shops where they know me and know what to show me, to shops that look like they get 1 customer a month because the owner is a crabby man. Personality goes a long way.
Most coins are overpriced but if you don't know how to haggle you shouldn't be in a pawn shop in the first place. My opinion.

You should have asked anyway. My experiences with those places are that things in the back are things they don't want people to see. Especially law enforcement. If I were you I'd ask just to see what he is talking about. One person I know does inspecting for the city plumbing and since most people in buisnesses know who he is and what he does, he sort of gets coins for what the pawn shops paid. If I went to the same place the prices would be tripled.

Only thing I've ever purchased at my Pawn Shop is coin folders/books. They have a giant stack of folders for 50 cents each and the books go for $2.50 to $5.00 for the higher end ones.

When Mom died and I needed help evaluating her collection, I went to a nearby pawnshop and asked if the guy knew his coins. He said the owner was the coin guy and that he only came in on occasion due to age and failing health. I called him and made an appointment explaining that I would pay him a fee to spend time going over them with me because I needed a third party to value the collection for estate purposes. I was clear that I was not interested in selling. We met and I spent large parts of the next two days there at his counter watching numberous coin sales and purchases as other folk came in to buy and sell. It was quite an education. The personality of the person on the other side of his counter had LOT to do with final sales price. Chatting him up or knowing him from previous fair exchanges seemed to go a long ways. An attitude could nearly get you thrown out of the store. Doing the talk-talk thing would encourage him to bring out other goodies from the safe in back. A very interactive place.
