Quote:Conder101 The problem is probably because the Mint has a Registered Trademark for the name " America the Beautiful Quarters" and they may have told the TV/Danbury Mint people they couldn't use it. You are correct, on the mint web page is does have America the Beautiful Quarters ®

I am not one to interpret legal things but I am under the impression that there could actually be a second go around with the National Parks type theme for all the states when this one is finished. Finally I think they end up with the old obverse with a reverse of Washington crossing the Delaware River. I read the Quarter Dollar Act of 2008It says this within the Act. ``(7) Period of issuance.-- ``(A) In general.--Subject to paragraph (2), the program established under this subsection shall continue in effect until a national site in each State has been honored. ``(B) Second round at discretion of secretary.-- ``(i) Determination.--The Secretary may make a determination before the end of the 9-year period beginning when the first quarter dollar is issued under this subsection to continue the period of issuance until a second national site in each State, the District of Columbia, and each territory referred to in this subsection has been honored with a design on a quarter dollar. You know, I don't have that many fingers and toes to figure out how long it will be but I bet it goes past 2032 at this rate until Washington Crosses the Delaware River comes out. The Washington quarter will be over 100 years old as it began in 1932. What might be wrong with an Act like this is that it goes way too far into the future with planning. Things do change and I think a twenty plus or thirty plus year commitment to staying with a design is far too presuming.

Condor,
I believe it's 12 bucks of quarters per park for 25. Sorry, I should have specified earlier.
Wheezy,
Oh man, I hope they don't go through another round...
et al.
Granted, I'm no lawyer so take this with a grain of salt but...I still don't see how having a trademark on a product would prevent someone who is selling such a product from using that name. I mean, on one hand you allow a middleman to sell your goods but then, on the other, you refuse to let them refer to your goods by the name you gave them? You know? I'm probably just completely messed up on this but this seems like craziness.
Does anyone know if there were any other trademarked names coming from the mint? Were the Westward Journey nickels trademarked?

50 State Quarters was also trademarked. 12 dollars face per park at $25 per park is about 50 cents per coin, the same as any other dealer would charge. If you were receiving part of the money you would certainly allow a middleman to use your trademark. If you were not receiving part of the money you might or might not, especially if you were also selling the product as yourself. If someone is selling your product and you have objections to their methods you very well may deny them permission to use your trademark. Once again especially if you are selling the product yourself. Wheezy, you are correct in your interpretation. We could have ATB Quarters through 2032, and then the "NJ State Quarter" comes back permanently.

sorry, correction, 12 quarters not 12 bucks of quarters. D'oh! So that's about 2 bucks a quarter. Again, sorry for the mix up!!

But yeah, if it were 12 bucks of quarters, I don't think I'd have raised too much of an eyebrow to it (other than the "all-new State Quarters" angle.) In short, I just smell shenanigans that don't help the uneducated buyer and that makes me weirded out on multiple levels.

12 quarters once again brings up the question, which parks get shorted because 12 quarters is 2 quarters per park with two left over. That means three coins for two parks and two coins for the other three.

I have a big problem with people calling them National Park quarters because many of them are NOT National Parks! For example,Bombay Hook,Delaware is a National Wildlife Refuge, and not a real exciting one at that.Being a former National Park Service employee,I got tired of trying to explain why visitors couldn't hunt in the parks when,as they said,"I can hunt in ----- Park" which usually turned out to be a National Forest or National Wildlife area. I know this seems trivial to coin folks but like so many things in this country, the details are extremely important.Kinda like the difference between State and Federal governments as they pertain to the Constitution of the United States. At least 10 of the "parks"are not even managed by the National Park Service!

The problem comes from the original bill and the idea behind it. They wanted to do a coin for each state showing a national park in that state. The bill was moving along nicely and had been discussed in numismatic circles for awhile before someone pointed out that not every state had a National Park in it. So they had to expend it to include the wildlife refuges, National forests or even National Historic places.

My feeling is they need to quit the thematic crap and mint coins as cheaply as possible. It must cost a small fortune to commission all of these designs then have dies changed every couple of months, etc. The problem is,about the only folks who use or care about coins are collectors and those without credit cards.I was at the gas station/convenience store yesterday,10 people ahead of me in line. Their purchases ranged from gas plus food down to a bottle of soda and not one of them used cash for their purchase. Then you read about all the Presidential dollars in vaults that nobody wants and you begin to wonder who is making these lame decisions and who are they trying to benefit. State Quarters were a success so we need to make more of them! That's like one reality show on tv becomes popular and now all you can get are reality tv shows!

Just my opinion, but I would not call them an extension, more like version 2.0. The main thing for me is that the designs are several times better than the Statehood Quarter run.

I agree, the State Quarters were for the most part rather lackluster, but it look like they are doing a much better job on the ATB Quarters. Of course once I actually get a chance to see some in hand my opinion may change.
