ClinkinKY: Did the mint notify you before they shipped your replacement coin or did it just show up? I sent mine back last Friday and haven't heard anything yet. And it definately had the vapor blasted finish!

I have to agree with daviscfad. How do you miss an entire step in the process and how does it then get past packaging or Quality control. How can you miss something like that? Wish I had one though.

Porter: I sent mine back Priority Mail. I received an email that they rec'd it about 7 days after mailing it (even though they rec'd it in 2 days according to my tracking no.) It then took about another 4-5 days to actually get replacement. Good luck.

Well, I think I may have one of these "light finish" varieties. I'd like to take a pic and post, but to be honest, I'm afraid I am not having any luck at getting the finish to show properly. Any suggestions on technique? I'm just using a Canon Powershot SD600 Digital Elph (few years old), so nothing special here.

I dont @##$$& believe my stupidity, I had a really bad day I received my ATB coin. I opened it up and noticed the finish was different. Then I noticed the scratches on obverse from under the N & I in United through Washingtons Neck. I was so mad I tossed the coin into the box, tapped it up and brought it down to the post office. Now I'm reading some didn't have the usual finish. I forgot all about the finish. Would of probably graded 67 68 tops. Wonder how rare these unfinished coins will be. Anyone think the mint did this on purpose to grab more attention. And sales.

Porter The return process is pretty easy. They even overnight the coin back to you. I returned mine Monday of last week and I had a Missed you sticker from UPS even though EVERYONE was home and up, And I have 3 dogs that bark when a fly @@$$'s on the carpet. They didn't make a sound. So the turn around was only a little over a week. I did have a return not come back for about a month but it was a PF 10th Oz GAE. Your paying a pretty big premium for these. If you don't like it send it back. I've been told by a few people they keep X amount of coins to replace coins with issues. I've only had to send back one item 2 times, the PF GAE, but it finally came back the way I wanted it. The shipping is just shy of $10 if you use a Priority Mail Small box, then insure it for $300 with del conformation. Call ahead and let them know your sending it back, Thats what I did and it might be why I received mine back so quickly.

I can only conjecture the mint employees were running behind schedule with Grand Canyon and simply got sloppy. The prior two releases were three weeks apart, and when I saw the process on June 16, they were already working on Mount Hood NF coins. The vaporizer doesn't work that fast and all of the coins have to be manually fed into the machine. That's where the scratches on the unfinished coins come in, I think. The vapor blasting removes the topmost layer of atoms and any imperfections on the coin. My guess is that they can do 150 coins an hour, so 1200 in a typical workday. It would take more than three weeks to vaporize all 27,000 coins. Quite a laborious and repetitive process, wouldn't surprise me if some employees that division called out sick from "fatigue." On a related note, the Mint says not all of 2011 uncirculated coins will be released this year. Until they can automate the P-mint process, it's really possible that it may be a short lived series, or dispense with the matte finish altogether. I think no one will complain if it's a bullion coin with a P-mintmark... @amassey: Sorry about your bad luck with the coin.

Thanks Bizy, Its one of those life lessons I only can learn by experiencing. I forgot all about the finish. How do you think TPG's will grade these, Unfinished coins. Will they be errors. I'm sure people will add a nice premium to them, As my uncle always says playing the ponies, " I had it, and it went" Can't wait to see whats inside the box today. UPS Note said will try and del again before 10:30am. I'll let ya know whats inside.

Its a beauty, Some slight rim damage. But happy to have in my collection. The capsule wasn't closed so it was just bouncing back and fourth. Anyone see any reports on an unfinished edge, Or really weak edge design. I don't have any lines going around 3/4 of the edge of the coin. Only where it says 999 fine you can just make them out. I hope this turns out to be something sought after, Kinda makes sending back the unfinished one sting a little less. And I'm going to start building my display for these, I have a few small motors that I'm going to hook up and have either each pedestal rotate or have one big circulating pedestal. If you haven't tried Google Sketch Up yet check it out its fun to play and work with.

amassey, that is one nice coin! Thanks for posting a pic of it. Can't really tell one way or another how the light finish/unfinished coins are going to do in the marketplace. One thing for sure, the coins don't have the same quality of reflectivity of a non-PL bullion coin. They just look 'unfinished.' Would be interesting if a regular bullion coin acidentally got the treatment and got sold as a collector coin...

Ours was scratched on the lower portion of the neck and we sent it back. The finish looked normal on mine. Have yet to receive the replacement. I have noticed that the airtights from the mint are NEVER all the way closed. None of the pucks have been, none of my ASEs have been either. I am going through my dads collection cataloging stuff, and things like his 99 SBA proofs and other single coins just dont close completely or are just a hair off. So it seems to be a long time ongoing issue.

Nice pics, amassey! Any pointers on how to get good quality macro pix like that? I want to upload pix of mine (I think I have the light finish variety) but my attempts have not produced worthwhile pictures.
