If she was going to buy them she should have done it right away and not left them sitting out in the open. I had about the same situation with pennies at my bank. Now I just use that bank as my dump

yeah I think she had no right to say that. Those coins belong to the bank, and as a customer you have the right to buy them. if she wanted them because she knows they are silver, she should have bought them and put them under the counter or something so no one could see them. those were fair game, and I'm sure if you brought the manager into it they would be yours. I too think she was just having a bad day and you caught her at the wrong time.

I don't think you can "buy" coins from a bank. The bank is not a retail outlet. What you should have been able to do was simply to have given her the same amount in face value from your pocket.
As far as the bank is concerned, silver dimes are worth 10 cents and silver quarters are worth 25 cents.

JPsned - That's what I asked to do , to get my change back from several checks I was cashing , and I wanted the quarter & dime to be part of the change. There was some sort of painted quarter in the tray and she said 'Well , you can have this one if you want'. So she knew the value , kept them out in the tray but wouldn't let me get them.

so all of you that is saying this teller was wrong, if you were the teller you would let the customer have them even though you wanted them yourself? Banks get busy at times and just because the teller didn't get them out of the drawer as soon as they came in doesn't mean she wasn't going to do so when she got a chance. Just because you are a customer doesn't mean you have the right to things just because you want them. If the teller doesn't want them or doesn't know what they are then I am sure they would have no problem but I am sure if you put yourself in the tellers place you would see this differently

At many banks the tellers collect silver and odd coins. They have to wait till the end of their shift where I work and then have a mgr witness them buying the coins out of their cash box. She does not have to give them to a customer and she does not have to let you sort through her coin trays...but... she could use some nicer people skills or you need to grow some thicker skin. I, for one, believe she probably said "absolutely not" in a positive non abusive manner that was conveying to you that she knew what they were and they were not available. You may have, after already mentally calculated the profit windfall you thought you were going to reap, been taken aback but I doubt the intention was abuse. When I had a coin drawer years ago I often told customers "I don't think so" when they asked for the coins I had set aside in the "odd coin slot" that I intended to buy for myself. Some just smiled, some laughed and some got angry...but none of them got the coins.

That kind of behaviour by anyone in a service industry is simply ridiculous--regardless of tone, etc. Sure, I understand that she may or may not have wanted the coins for herself but that is beside the point. Her job as a bank teller is to do one thing: serve you as you make transactions with the bank. Not only does this sort of behaviour hurt the image of the bank but it leaves customers (without whom she'd have no job) angry at the fact that they play second fiddle to her wants and needs. For that matter what other jobs would this type of action be acceptable? If this were a restaurant and the waiter refused to give you one of the last slices of pie (or whatever) simply because he/she wanted them for after shift that sort of service would be inexcusable so why is this any different (especially if said pie were out in a case, viewable by the public)? You have been denied a service, offered to you as a paying customer, by someone who clearly was after their own ends rather than doing their job. I understand that the Coin World has a different angle when dealing with banks than most people but idea is still the same. Heck, I may even understand the behaviour of the teller if she were having to deal with someone who just demanded 10 boxes of halves and returned 30 by way of a coin machine but if this story is accurate (and even if it's slightly exaggerated) such behaviour is ridiculous.

Heck. Even if she were to say something like "oh...I was hoping to have those after shift..." (with an air of disappointment) at least that would have forced a new decision of "do I want to take away something she was hoping to have" or "maybe we could split them up" or whatever.
Either way, it'd be up to the actual customer to decide and not the employee.

The way I look at it is, Everyone has a job. You get certain personal perks that others don't get based on the job you do. For instance, I'm a network Engineer, I haven't had to buy a Cat5 Cable for the last 5 or so years. If I need one I go through our junk box of cable (that's going to the trash anyway) and take what I need. My mom is a nurse, it was always nice that we didn't have to wait in the ER waiting room to be seen, cause she could just walk back and ask one of the Docs "hey, can you take 5 minutes and write this prescription for his ear infection?" Bank tellers handle a lot of money, so they get dibs on money the see that they like. That is their perk. Their job is to provide you money, in amounts and denominations you specify. No where does it say they have to give you a specific roll of half dollars, they just have to provide what you ask for. Is it irritating when it's RIGHT there? Of course, you could reach out an touch it! Happens to me enough, but I just smirk and usually try to mess with those tellers. Ill say something like, "You know, War Nickels have a much larger silver content relative to their face value than Halves do." Then I Smile (politely) and walk away. I've lost nothing, so no reason to get upset.

Quote: I'm sure it's not something I should get upset over, but I am upset and will be closing my account on monday. I can't count the number of times I felt like doing that at my bank for snotty tellers. You'll find them all over, though, no matter where you go. Let a little time pass, you don't want to make a rash decision. Just some advice...

Quote: Whatever happened to the customers always right? The customer has never been always right, some places just treat them as if they are but it doesn't mean they are or ever were. I guess some of us are just going to have to disagree on this one. I am sure if you were the teller or ever worked in the service industry you would feel differently. Just because you are a customer of that bank doesn't mean you can have anything in that bank that you want. Go to the Bank Managers desk and tell him you want to buy his name plate off of his desk and see what he tells you, probably "I don't think so". Its in the bank and he is there to serve you but just because you want something doesn't give you a right to it unless they are willing to give it to you

Tellers can be such jerks. I was hunting for halves last week when a teller said, "Are you looking for silver? What are you gonna do? Kill a werewolf?". He didn't have any halves anyway. Thankfully, that wasn't one of my normal banks. The same day, another one said "Oh, we don't have any silver.", then proceeded to give me a 1968 half from her tray!

The people skills thing works both ways. You have to create a relationship with the tellers at local bank, not treat them like the hired help, particularly if you are going to buy rolls from them and then turn around and dump the coins back there later...so that you aren't considered the weird kook that always comes in on Friday to buy a dozen rolls and bring them back unsorted on Monday. The bank is like any other workplace, the tellers and cashiers are human and do talk about memorable customers, particularly the difficult, demanding and odd, and seldom encountered pleasant customer. If you get to know them, let them know you collect coins or silver, treat them nicely, and you might be rewarded with an occasional surprise. There is a fair amount of flaming of cashiers and tellers on this forum which always surprises me, since the people on here seem to be fair and mild-mannered.
