I stumbled onto this site while looking for information on a Standing Liberty quarter I found metal detecting. It appears that there is some very knowledgeable people on here and thought that someone might have an idea the purpose of five holes being punched into this 1837 Large Cent I found. Ideas from other sites thought maybe it was used for a cattle tag and another suggested a child's spinning toy. If you look real close it appears that some letters are visible in the center on the reverse. I included a closeup of the letters. Thanks for any help you can give and I look forward to your replies.

Going out on a limb here, maybe used as a bracket for something?

SHOW US THE SLQ!

OK. My guess, some guy was bored who used the 5 dot pattern as his signature. Maybe liek the roll searchers who mark coins in a certian color or spot for whatever reason.

I like the dice idea above too

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess we will never know for sure why it has the holes but I'm going to explore some of your ideas. I have added a picture of the SLQ also a photo of the other coins I found in the area that the five holer came from. Thanks again

Hmm. I don't know what that one could've been used for. I know they used to notch the edges of coppers for use as gears in a clock. Maybe something like that? Very interesting though.
