Back in 2008 I purchased a Specimen set with the Eider dollar. This is the coin I received:

2008-Eider-Loonie-Error?

Have any of you ever seen or heard of other errors like this on the specimen Dollar coins? I don't know what this type of error is called, but besides the missing metal area near the duck, just above the second "A" in Canada seems to be a line extending from the rim down into the field. In hand, it looks like what I thin is called a strike through? Haha. Sorry if I have the terms wrong, but I do not have a lot of knowledge when it comes to errors. The photo isn't the best, but it shows what I wanted to convey.

I thought it was kind of neat, so just thought I would share. If any of you have more insight I would love to hear it!

Thanks!

Hello PlatinumDuck

This is called lamination. Fairly common, but fascinating. Look it up on the web.

Looks like a struck through foreign object to me.

This looks like a strike-through error. Nice find - pretty uncommon on Specimen coins. I think they are supposed to be inspected... ~ JFK ~

Looking closer at it, yes I agree this is more likely a struck through foreign object. And actually, this coin is nickel electroplated with bronze, so if that was lamination we'd see nickel.

That the mint would put something like that in a Specimen set. Poor quality control again.

Either way sounds great to me!

And littlemoney, I agree. This is pretty poor control if something like this gets out.
