I was out running errands this morning, so I decided to drop by my local coin shop. I do this periodically to see if he may have picked up anything of interest to me. Usually he says he has no ancients. But today he was talkative and produced two jars filled with what he referred to as junk coins. We proceeded to dump them and go through the contents. Sure enough I found two Roman coins. He gave them to me for a small fee. The first is an Aurelian Antoninianus RIC V 386. This one is in very good condition: OBV: IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG, radiate bust right REV: RESTITVT ORBIS, female on the left presents a wreath to Aurelian, holding a sceptre, Gamma in ex. The second coin is a Gallienus Antoninianus, RIC 157. This one dosen't look as nice, but it still has silvering on both sides of the coin: OBV: GALLIENVSAVG - Radiate head right REV: ABVNDANTIA AVG, Abundantia standing right, emptying cornucopiae; B in left field

The first coin is excellent - well worth 'a small fee'
Is it from Serdica?

Are you sure it's from Serdica? I have it as coming from Antioch.

Those coins are very nice for a "small fee". lol
I wonder how much you paid for them. I suspect that coin shops perhaps would charge more. I called my local coin shop and they told me that they had nothing but slugs. Kind of confused me a little bit since the guy seemed honest about it.

Since everyone is wondering what a small fee is, let's just say I paid less then $5 for both coins.

Quote: Are you sure it's from Serdica? No - was just wondering, question not a statement. Quote: let's just say I paid less then $5 for both coins Very good indeed - often wonder how some dealers can call themselves numismatists when, as in this case they clearly know nothing at all about ancients, he could have easily sold that for much, much more. I know they may specialise in other areas but it only takes a minute on the internet to see if something really is 'junk'. Good for us I suppose.

Not a bad pair of coins. I wish I had a coin dealer close by. The closest one is about 30-40 min away (and I don't even know if they sell Romans). Again nice coins jw.

I called another shop here in town and they told me that they only had about 3 ancient coins. I was like, that's all you have, surely you have more? They said no. I asked them about the coin show and they said they don't have many there either. Too many US coin collectors. lol

This dealer only deals in modern coins, mostly modern U.S. with a sprinkling of world coins. He had these two coins just tossed in jar with what he called his junk coins. These were the only two Roman coins in the bunch. One thing he does for me though. If someone comes into his shop with questions about Ancients, or wants to buy or sell Ancients, he has my name and number to pass along. So far it's not been fruitful, but, hey, who knows. One day a widow may come in with a load of Ancients wanting to dump them and I will be right there (I can dream, can't I?).
