Here's another error puzzle. I got this cent probably 35 years ago and always assumed it was an off-center error. Dealers I've shown it to recently couldn't agree whether it was a legitimate error or an alteration. Can anyone out there offer an opinion, based on my photos? The first image shows the edge of the coin where the blank portion becomes distinct from the rim. Detail on this shot is unfortunately poor but perhaps it might provide a clue to a specialist. The obverse and reverse photos are pretty faithful to the original.

Thanks for your comments!

Very likely damage caused by a press that strikes lucky pennies. It is not an error - of this I am sure.

Ah, I love a controversy! Either it's an alteration, or a genuine error; of this I'm pretty sure.
FYI, the coin is very slightly oval in shape. The diameter through the blank area is the same as the diameter of a normal Wheat cent while the perpendicular (top-to-bottom) diameter is shorter by a fraction of a millimeter. There is a slight waviness to the coin which could I suppose have been caused by an alteration process.
Would it be worth checking the weight on this? I expect both a genuine error and an alteration would weigh the same since no metal would be lost by squeezing the cent in a novelty coin press.
Anybody else have any input? Thanks!

what was supposed to be being pressed into the coin ?

all of the novelty presses I have ever seen have straight wheels with a design on them,, I have never seen one with a curve that is blank?

Im just having a hard time visualizing a novelty press at work on this coin .
