....so I might as well max out that 20%, and blame myself for the rest. New toy:  Canon Digital Rebel XT, with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. This is the older model, not the 10MP XTi - the difference between 8 megapixals and 10 megapixels is only 200px of vertical, and settling for the older model saved a bunch of cashola. I don't know if I'll be able to duplicate the quality, but I can now match PCGS TrueView shots for size.  The battery's charging, and I'm reading stuff, but hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of first shots up tonight. |

OK, after snapping one random shot to make sure the camera and CF card worked, below you will find the first real pic from the XT. All I did was mount the thing on a tripod, point it down at a coin, held a desk lamp up in my hand to shine on the coin (plus I left the overhead light on), and shoot the coin, on full Auto settings.  I can think of no words to describe how I feel. The pic, for those of you who aren't familiar, is of a gold Sovereign. It's a 22mm coin, slightly smaller than a Washington quarter. The image posted here is shrunk to less than half size. No post-processing, no white balance, just turn it on and snap the shot, and it makes a 22mm coin into a 2000-pixel monster, razor-sharp at full size. It doesn't even fit on my 20" LCD screen.  I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this thing. |

Welcome to Canon, Dave :) Nice lense you picked-up there. I'm using a Sigma 28-135 (macro at 135) 1:3.8-5.6 with my XT.

I was thinking you were using one of them S2 IS camera's? If you did what made you change to this one and are you getting better results with this one then the S2? The reason I ask is because I am still using the 25 dollar camera I got on ebay to do all my coin shots and all though they look acceptable they aren't anything to write home to mom about and have been doing some comparison on different models to see which camera I think will do the best job for coins because thats basically all I take pictures of except the occasional snap of the lil girl when she is doing something memorable |

If all you did was mount the camera to a tripod and snap a pic, with an overhead light and a desk lamp on that coin, then you need to reverse the title of your post!!!!!!!!
That being said, awesome picture on auto settings.

That really is a stunning pic. I have not really gotten into taking them myself, but if I ever do, I hope that they turn out that awsome!

I'm a very brand-loyal person, and this is not exactly my first Canon. I also have an S2 IS, and both of my stepsons got A-series Canons a couple Christmases ago. My other "main" forum counts a few serious photographers among its' membership, and the unanimous preference among them for a macro lens was the one I got. You'll be pleased to know, TwoKopeiki, that your lens was the second preference, and the first choice for those who are not as silly with their money as I. Knowing this was coming is the reason I haven't yet imaged those thalers, by the way. |
