I think it looks pretty good!! I would suggest cropping out most of the black background, that's not what we want to see, and it takes up valuable space.

I agree with Frank and Becky - a little bit out of focus and a lot of background. But it looks like it has a lot of potential - keep at it! Do you use any kind of image editing software?

Cheers,

Roman

Do you have a copy stand or tripod? That will help alot with cutting down on the blurries.

First, thanks for the thought, I will adapt the ideas and try again.

To answer the questions, Nope, have never even used a digital camera until this pic so I will have to learn how to edit. Yes, I have a photo stand. Took my drill press made a bracket that mounted in the chuck , bought two magnetic work lights and with the adjustable table had what I thought was the worlds greatest stand. I cannot get a good pic to save my soul. Everything is washed out with light. After much frustration; I took the coin to the kitchen, put it on the counter on top of the dish towel, turned the counter lights down to about half intensity with the variable light switch, put the cybershot camera on micro and took the pic holding it by hand. Now I have to add what I have learned here to what I learned about lighting in the kitchen experiment and fire up the drill press camera stand again. More pics from the MAD photographer coming soon.

How much manual control does your camera have, Jim? You can likely make up for having too much light by closing the aperture (changing it upwards from f3.2 or wherever you are to the f7-8 neighborhood), and/or speeding up the shutter to 1/125 or better. The faster the shutter speed, the more likely you are to get a nice pic, generally.

The pic you posted is an *excellent* start. I think we can make that camera take perfectly decent coin shots.

Do you know what the closest Macro focusing distance is? Either way, for best lighting you're going to want 10-12" to the coin if possible, so you can tuck the lighting right up to the camera's lens - the closer to vertical you can make the light to the coin, the better you'll like it.

All of this is generalizing, though - what works for a nice BU Morgan does not work for a BU Lincoln, and none of that works for a circulated Large Cent. However, those details are for the future.

Yes, looks pretty good... but unless it's a double die (that would be funny) it does seem a little blurry... if your camera has a flower button you might want to try it - helps with closeups.
