Thanks for the links Sir, I mean SuperDave  I spent some time on Gerry Fortin's site yesterday (wow, that guy has created a wonderful resource) trying to attribute what I am seeing on the coin... no joy in Muddville today

Something is surely up with this, and I don't think it is MD. Just looking at the top of the first 1, the shape is totally off. I hope it is a new find, good luck!

I have sent an email to Gerry Fortin asking for help identifying what is going-on with the date on this coin. I will up-date as soon as I hear a response. OK.

I received a response from Gerry Fortin and he has forwarded the images and inquiry along to a Steve Crain, whom he says is the expert on Seated half dimes.

Yes Crain is an expert on Half Dimes, but you said this was a dime. Fortin is the dime expert. |

Good call Conder101, it is a Seated half dime. I wasn't paying enough attention when I made the original post.  My mistake and thank you for the correction.

I received a lengthy reply from Steve Crain today. Steve summarizes his remarks in the following paragraph:

Crain: I believe what you have is an example of a previously identified, but as yet unnumbered variety which should properly be designated as '1861/1861', and will eventually be numbered something like V5 in the Valentine sequence. It is also very likely the same variety as the presently (although improperly) numbered varieties V5 and V7. I presently have four (4) examples of the V5 (same variety as your coin), with one in MS-60 and another in AU-58.
In short, I think Steve Crain is saying this coin should be termed "1861/1861" Seated Liberty Half Dime and will likely (eventually) be assigned a variety number of V-5.
As for rarity number or value, I still have no idea

Hang on to it until they get it numbered, then get it slabbed. Then auction it or just enjoy it.
