I don't have '35 years' or even a significant percentage of that figure to speculate in collectibles markets.
So I just buy what pleases my eye, at whatever the current market price happens to be.
A good eye for quality and a practiced sense of value will certainly reward a buyer in the future no matter what his favorites are. The coin market is huge, worldwide, and growing more diversified as internet access expands globally, spreading knowledge and access to those previously denied same. As long as there is a reasonable amount of stability in human society, there will always be markets for pretty things, in many categories, no matter what they are.
It seems to me all this speculation about 'which coins to buy' for the future, totally misses the point, which is, do it for FUN or don't do it at all. You will drive yourself nutz, or broke, trying to outguess the future and all the other would-be profiteers out there.

I would have to say some AU range harder date Barber halves. I think they are undervalued and hard to find.

geeesh, 35 years isn't a very long time in "coin years" ...

=> amazingly, "1977" is already 35 years ago ... and I don't get too excited over the 1977 coins ... but if I must choose 3 coins, then I think that I'll tuck-away 3 of my platinum coins and hope that metal prices continue to soar!

Any current key to a series is a good choice as they will always have interest but some odd thoughts are:

1958 PR 67 or better deep cameo Franklin half.

Any MS 65 or better Walking Liberty half.

any mid range MS double eagle.

As many cent searchers know, zincolns are difficult to find in sparkling red condition, MS 65+. Zinc corrodes way to fast and seems to attract verdigree all to easily. I think since the Lincoln Cent series is so popular, these coins will be very sought after in high grades and thus there will be very few because they are so easily damaged and corroded.

Other than that,
1916-D Merc
1909SVDB
1914-S Barber quarter-same mintage as the 1916-D but RedBook lists $80 in G4

As many of those Large Cents as possible. They are expensive now so in 35 or more years they will probably be worth more than my house. Some are already there.

Mid grade common Morgan dollars. All the junk silver is going to melters, all the high grade is going to the slabbers.

Higher budgets: Low-mintage Liberty gold $2.50s to $20s, Seated dollars in EF or better.

Blue-collar budgets: Barber quarters and Seated dimes in F to EF, especially earlier dates or semi-keys.

rachums107:

"1914-S Barber quarter-same mintage as the 1916-D but RedBook lists $80 in G4"

And available in good.
Try to find one like this.
I say again it is the AVAILABILITY of a given coin in a given condition which will prove to be the determining factor over time.

If one has the money, the 09s VDB and the 16-D can be had today and thirty-five years from now.

But:
Difficult today, impossible tomorrow.
